I have an opportunity to buy a replica 45/70 Sharps. It takes paper cartridges. The guy wants $500 for it. It's legal to use this rifle in Delaware for deer. However, I know nothing about paper cartridges.
I take it you use 70 grains of FFG powder with a 45 caliber 240 grain slug. My question is, what kind of paper would one use to make a paper cartridge? How would you fold it to make a cartridge? It's loaded from the breach end so the paper has to be pretty stiff I think. Any help would be appreciated.

Press in a lubed bullet [black powder freindy lube] A card on the back side would be nice to, then pour the chamber full from your flask or measure & close the breach. Till you learn the paper tricks.

Bubba: I think a paper cartridge 45/70 would be an absolute blast!! And as bounce said that would work too. I've never shot cartridge BP so can't be much help. But here is a link to get you started. www.wikihow.com/Roll-Paper-Cartridges-(Reenacting)I found it by doing a google search, using "making Paper Black Powder Cartridges" There is a lot of info out there on the net. If you jump into this adventure,I'll be looking forward to hearing of your adventure!

WHAT BRAND of rifle, if it's a IAB pass on it as the leak worse than the original Sharps paper ctg guns.
Now it it is a decent gun you can make nitrated paper ctgs. just like the old ones from oniion skin or cigarette paper nitrated and all. You make a dowell to wrap and glue the paper into tubes and then glue the tube to the end of the bullet. Put in your powder 60-70 grains in the old ones and up to 80 depending on your chamber. Fold the end of the paper tube and you are ready to go. If you want to nitrate the paper for better ignition soak the sheets in a saturate solution of potassiam nitrate (saltpeter) and let them dry when they are dry glue and fold as previous. I use to make paper nitrated ctgs for my percussion revolvers for quick loading and they work just fine. We did some for a fellows Sharps and the ctgs worked but the IAB leaked gas so bad he couldn't stand to shoot it. We converted it to a 45-70.

Thanks Jim for that video and 2M's for the instruction. It doesn't look to difficult to do. Oh and 2M's .. I think he said it is a Uberti. I think I've got him now to take one of my shotguns and a couple hundred bucks for it. It's a little difficult right now to come up with the $500... LOL... anyway, thanks for our help.
