I have been trying to figure out why my ruger would throw a first shot off in a group for a while now (about 7 years) when i reloaded the mag. Since joining the fall creek valley gun club I noticed the 1911 shooters not using the release lever to drop the slide on the colts when installing a new mag. (Something I always have done) not being a big 1911 shooter. Rather they slingshot the slide by pulling it back and letting it go. I did the smart thing for me and Asked the question WHY? After getting a big training session on why the thumb release was there (in case you must do it one handed) and getting told not to use it unless you had to guess what started happening? My Ruger mark II first shot not grouping went away. A simple thing like slingshotting the bolt instead of using the bolt release overcame 10 years of wondering why i could not get a whole mag to group. All 10 shots grouping well clustered together now. In a couple of weeks I get to shoot all of that guys 1911;s but so far I have a favorite or two. The springfield loaded as mentioned here and a kimber Target II in 38 super. I shoot the super much better fast than the spingfield. I did not like a brand new commander size colt compaired to either of the others. I also so a rock river arms 1911, (ok but it failed to feed twice in one mag,) a older custom m1a1 creation that did not hit where I aimed it but the owner did very well with it. I am learning a few tricks at the club.
