The octogon barrels are contender barrels. I have never seen them in encores. That is for factory barrels. If you go with MGM or bullberry I bet for a price they will make you anything you want. Octagon barrel have special octogon forearms. You can also get the packmyer grips and foreends and they were very popular back in the day.
If you look at my pic I have the rear grip with a rubber pad introduced in 1983 I believe. My first one had the original finger groove grip and yes with rifle rounds like the 35 rem it was brutal. I still have the old grip and it is nice in the mouse rounds like 22 and 222 rem and feels a bit better to point it.
Chamber pressure is the major difference in encores and contenders. If you are looking at pistols then I would say a contender is the way to go. 7-30 waters is a great round and min does MOA from a bench. I still use the 35 rem lots in deer season as I have the bu-pod setuo on it in the barrel and can shoot offhand with it very well when it is folded down. And then once in a blind I can use the little legs like bench shooting. Mine like the 150 gran core lok 35 rem rounds real well and shoot them out a ways further than the normal 200 grain ones I use in my marlin.

I'm not much excited on TC pistols but .22-250 would be all I would want or need in big size from their smaller or pistol cal or shotgun barrel would be all that would interest me. 45-70 No a hot 45 LC would be my choice. Nither would be much beond 100 yds and the LC would perform the best over all in my book. Did I ever say that I have come to realy like the 45 LC today? I do. As good of a 100 yd deer gun as any, and most of my deer are under 100 yds.

I understand the 100 yard deer round well. I had that smooth bore 870 and was good for about 50 yards and in a attempt to shoot further I bought the contender in 35 rem and was good to 150. Then the sabot 12 guage rounds and I could do 5 inches at 200 yards but it cost 3 dollars a shot to do so. In all that time since 1983 the longest shot I have taken was 89 steps to impact (I did undershoot a big buck this year by underestimating distance as it was 239 steps. ) Most of my deer are 50 yards away or less if I do my part and not get lazy with where I put my stand or blind.
22-250 is an encore, for a fun 45 LC the contender will do or a marlin 1894 and dicks sporting goods had round barrel 1894 45 LC's under 500 two months ago.

I noticed that a lot of the Contender 44 Mag barrels talk about chokes and .410. Are the 44 mag barrels smooth bore ? or partly smooth bore ? If so I don't think I would go for that.

The contenders are available in 45 colt/410 they have rifled barrels and straight finned screw on chokes for shooting 410 shells. Just don't forget to take off the choke before shooting the 45 colts! 44 mag is too small for 410 shells.

For a few year T/C made a special barrel with chokes in 44 mag for 44 mag shotshells. Kind of a snake/rat gun. They are traded around alot to collectors.
