ok i just received delivery today of a very old but fairly decent shape Savage 3B. it is a single shot (as all model 3's are) that will be my dedicated rifle i use with the scouts for their rifleman merit badge. it has a rear side mounted peep site along with a rear fold down dovetail site and front globe site. i didn't have time to measure as i needed to get back to work but the barrel is either 24" or possibly 26". walnut stock, chrome plated bolt and trigger, stamped trigger gaurd. i hope it turns out to be a shooter.

My kids and my grand kids all started on a rifle like that, a M15 though with stright irons. They are a super kids gun and never wear out. I got mine used in 1980 and it was old then.

i took it out of the stock over the weekend and gave it a cleaning. man they sure built them simple back then. i'll be curious to the accuracy with the single action screw and post system. if this white stuff would keep from coming down i would like to get out and run a few through it.

looks to be original unless someone has rubbed in a coat of linseed or two recently. however the shine you see is from yours truely wiping it down with some lemon oil before putting the barreled action back into the stock.

Looks all correct to me. Does the front sight stay up? Some of them have lost the little spring that puts tension on it to keep it up and when you shoot them they fall over. Even has all the different diopter holes in the eyepiece, nice. They make nice rifles for kids to learn on. Shoot very well. I have seen them sell for the same price as the Winchester 69B which also has a peep sight although not as elaborate. $250 to $350

bill the front site is not a fold down to my knowledge, i'll have to go look again. the rear site is a fold down and the peep site is a sided receiver mounted. i gave after shipping 160.00 for it and thought that was fair. it was exactly what i was looking for, old school, decent shape and a bit different than the win 67's that i normaly see.

I like the sights alot. You can see the target thru the holes. Is it a williams peep? I also noticed what appears to be 3 arpatures in the rear peep of differing sizes and that is real neat. Most of the ones i see have external arpatures and most of them get lost over the years.
I do enjoy the longer barreled target rifles with peep sights. They rem model 12 i picked up has the fold back peep but the front is solid.

Bill i did a little digging and i am told that my 3B is a pre war S option rear sight. the front site was missing and the previous owner order the hood and front side from numridge (sp?) but the rear is original.

Originally they had a front sight that rather than a single front insert like a lot of guns have they had two front sight blades that you could fold one over to the side and the use the other. One had the one like you have and the other was just a post. I thought I could see where the one you have folded to the right but I must of been mistaken.

to tell the truth i haven't looked that close, but i'll definately give it a peek today. i wonder hard hard it would be to find an original? knowing my luck it would be like trying to find a needle in a hay stack.

well i sat there trying to figure out what was original and what was maybe added to the rifle and then i remembered i have a copy of Nick Stroebel's "Old Gunsights" so after going through the section on Savage rifles and then the Lyman's section looking for the sights on this rifle i ended up going through the Steven's firearm section and there they where. the peep sight is a No 105 Stevens Receiver Peep Sight, the rear sight is a No 19 Stevens folding Leaf Sporting Rear Sight, the knurled thumbscrew adjust the windage via a cam action built into the base while the Elevation is handled via the notched elevator. so now the question is, did Savage ship this rifle with these sights on it, or did someone at sometime swap them out? i did find the reference to your dual front post sight Bill, but the one i have in there is just a single post.
