Range shooting has always been done, and is even a sport of its own- benchrest shooting. Lots of people that never go hunting use shooting ranges regularly. What's changed is the rise of spray and pray rifles, and cheap surplus ammo to feed them.

I shoot still board shotgun, I shoot 22 bulls-eye pistol. I shoot 50 and 100 yard 22 rifle. I shoot trap sometimes and skeet less, I don't just sight in hunting rifles. Until i get the handle on making my own ammo the centerfire aspect is just to expensive as I have been buying to many guns lately.
Mainly for fun but the 22 rifle stuff is getting fairly serious. I have been attending fall creek valley conservation club and will become a member in january and attend the reloading class.
One of the reasons I will join the club is to get a M1 Grand from the CMP. Always wanted to hear the CHING when empty. Also the range is very neat. bow and rifle skeet and trap.
I also like a little spray and pray. The smell of gunpowder multiplied buy multi rounds gives me a rush.
I think the R-15 is a fine hunting rifle just not what we were raised shooting. I bet 70% of the items sold at the Indy 1500 gun and knife show are ar related uppers and lowers for self build guys, I see them bringing in lowers by the case load ever day of the show and i think there are 20 in a case.
I think a that guys like us with little to no real skill in building rifles (2moons and a few others not included) could put together a r-15 clone for about 600-750. You can build it up just like you want it. In Indy we even have build nights where you can borrow a couple of the speciality tools required and have experienced builders help and basically walk you through the whole process step by step from parts to finish product in one evening with time left over to bullshit and drink coffee and shoot the final build.
Never thought I would own a AK-47 until one showed up at my door with the lady saying buy it or I am going to pawshop it off. Neat little ammo waister, Neat little SHTF gun. Will an AR be in my future? I bet at some time the right one will come over and scream buy me. A 20 inch .223 with a flat top optic ready and six position stock would make a nice winter coyote gun.

Now we have a new problem. I know Jabba is going to take exception to this but here in missouri deer drives are better known as "jump shooting cluster****s" For several years I hunted next to a few hundred acres of land owned by minonites who had their own militia (which is true). And on opening day of deer season it sounded like a war zone. I'm talking firing a couple hundred shots!!! They were all lined up and when ever a deer was kicked up every one of them unloaded 10 shots with a SKS. If a deer runs across a field, you're probably going to be able to get 2-3 shots with a bolt action and 3-5 with a lever action. With more of these AR's in the field (particularlly when it comes to deer drives), you are going to get to fire as many as the magazine will hold / what the state allows. That's going to result in a lot more problems ranging from wounded deer, property damage, and human death. Deer hunting on many pieces of land is already dangerous enough.

I think the r-15 comes standard with a 5 and 20 round mag. I do not spray and pray at deer myself. I would guess it is up to the individual states to mandate what is correct for them. In indiana we have blackpowder.shotgun/pistol cal rifle/handgun/ to go to max range I use my pistol which sounds very weird but that is the law.

I could get a Stevens, Mossy, and Marlin all day long out the door for that price. Catch them during the fall, they'll have a scope on them. Can probably get a Howa in the fall too I don't ask for much though

Yes you can get a bolt for less than 1000 all day long.
Bolts are less complicated guns. Simpler guns have less parts and less cost. What you still have is a 366 dollar bolt gun that will resell for 200 after the season is out. You are not comparing apples to apples here.
With the r-15 you need to compair to the BAR or rem 7400 and the starting wage is 659 on the 7400 in wood. the going price on a r-15 is 1003 and the r-25 in 308 is 1309. add uppers in all cailbers for 500-700 each. the bushmaster is 1300 and the dpms is 1000. So the r-25 at 1,100 is most likely right in line with the current price as the market seems to sell at.
I spent all my money on guns, ammo, beer and the ladies, the rest of it I just waisted.

Boy I hate to side with Red, but for the kind of money an AR platform runs, I'm pretty sure I could get that new lightweight Kimber in .270 that would be more my style.

I think it's very unfortunate that the semi-auto centerfire "hunting" rifle never took off. Really, it was just never needed though...and if it wasn't needed then, why is it needed now at a time where the industry as a whole preach ethical 1 shot kills? What makes it ok to mix modern warfare (more technologically advanced and "spacey" than every before) with the traditional sport of hunting? Hunting has always been what has seperated rational gun owners from the loons. And now they are intermingling. This is going to make it very difficult for me to know who not to talk to.

Ah red you can still talk to me.
I will even let you pop off 30 rounds from the new AK, Then we can settle down and shoot the contender rifle or pistol one shot at a time. Take a break and then shoot 19 rounds off from the model 60 marlin. Take a break and then shoot a few in the steven 15 or win 47.
Really it is all about the same. I keep saying this but the ar based 260 rem rifle I shot was one sweet little hunting rifle.
