I stopped at a garage sale and bought a few older boxes of ammo. I am talking older. A winchester cleanbore lesssmoke 22 long ect.
Anyway I bought em all. Got home and there is a full box of 50 winchester 38 automatic colt pistol rounds the box is not the best but looks to be circa 1930's or so buy the label. I thought the were 38 special. Weird looking little round.
Anyone have an old 38 acp? Completely forgot that round was ever made.

I have an orginal Colt Model 1911 in 38 super. They were popular in the days of prohibition. Mine was ordered by the Knox County Sheriff at the time and I have the orginal box and paperwork. I occasionally carry the 38 Super as a duty gun and it still shoots quite well!! The 38 Supers are now used by some competetion shooters. How much would you like for the box of 38's ?

IS the super not different than the 38ACP. 38 suoer I have heard of. Looked in the blue book of gun values and colt has not made a gun for them since the 1920;s or 30's/

Buddies 38 super race gun hits stuff fast and hard, I am going to call him today and find out. I think these are meek and mild rounds from the looks of them I highly doubt they would run his race gun in 38 super.
Maybe the 38 acp is the same but his brass were nickel and stamped 38 super. Maybe it is like a plus P plus load of the 38 acp.
I think they were for some knid of colt pocket pistol of bygone era.

The 38 ACP and the 38 Super are dimensionally identical. The difference is pressure. The 38 ACP was first offered in an earlier than 1911 Colt autoloader (Model 1905, I think?). The earlier gun wasn't as strong as a 1911. When the 1911 became common, and there was a demand for something a bit more powerful, the hotter loading was developed. The thinking was that the pressure difference was enough to justify a new cartridge name. So, you can shoot 38 ACP ammo in a 38 Super pistol. Shooting 38 Super in the Colt 1905 or any other gun marked 38 ACP isn't such a good idea.

38 ACP was the first incantation of the round. It was developed for the M1900 Colt Auto and shot a 130 gran bullet at 1000 fps or so. In the 30's it was whooped up for the M1911 platform and renamed the 38 Super as it then shot a 130 at about 1300 fps and was suppose to defeat the body armor of the time. They still make a yearly run of 38 Auto for the older guns and 38 Super is regaining popularity as a self defense and hunting round. South of the border where 45's are banned the trente ocho is really popular. I carry a 38 Super also but mine is a tricked out 1911.
