Due to my health in the spring and summer of 09 and 10, I haven't killed a squirrel with a shotgun in 2 years. Well I gave it a try this morning with the 20ga mod single shot since a 30 mile drive was cheaper than a 120 miles.
I dropped 6 squirrels in 9 shots. I found 5; 2 of which gave me a good chase before I ran them down. I kept thinking I had a 22lr and was threading the needle through branches and leaves which ate up a lot of the pattern.
At the end of the morning, I finally seemed to find my rythem again. Of course the leaves are going to be comming off soon and that means rifle. So...till next Memorial Day ;D

That's probably the next time I'll get after them with a shotgun.

We used to use 6 or 7.5 on rabbits and they always worked well even a single 6 shot pellet would stop most rabbits.
For tree rats we would step up to #4's in high base. I hated using #6 on them unless you needed lead in your diet.

I have to use 6 shot with that modified barrel. The 4's and 5's just don't work.
I try to keep shots under 30 (in part because I like to see how close I cab get) and I won't shoot if it's past 35 yards.

I probably haven't shot a squirrel with a shotgun in 20 yrs. Like Jmarriott, I prefer not to have to pick shot out of my teeth. I also like the challenge of shooting them with a scoped .22. Leaves on the trees is not a problem for me as I usually don't do much squirrel hunting until after deer and turkey season are over. Even if I decide to hunt squirrels during big game season I usually take my Savage .22/20 OU and put 3" #3 buckshot (for deer) or #4 shot (for turkey) in the shotgun barrel. I may take a few high brass #6 shells with me, but I hardly ever put them in the gun.
