Seems like everyone that raises Pheasants has problems with them pecking Bounce. A friend of mine works for a hunting lodge peeping the birds every year and in trade rather than getting paid gets to hunt for free every year. Peeping is putting little blinders through their beaks so they cannot see straight ahead. Easy to tell a bird that has been peeped as they call it as their nostril hols are about twice as big. Seems that to peep them they put the blinders through the birds nostril and it keeps them from seeing straight ahead. Makes it hard for them to do much pecking.

The differance Bill is.......... When your raising them to be released, you just release them when they start pecking before they get real bad. When you have to keep them penned up until hunting season it's harder to control thus the blinders are needed......... Correct me if I'm wrong Bounce....

Never kept any beyond 5 weeks old, but pecking can start in less than a week old and you can't realy release untill 4 weeks at the very earlyest. Blinders to me would be a huge pain in the A$$ and so far I use habitat in the pen to stop or slow down pecking as it gives the peckee a way to get away from the pecker. I see no room in a surrigator for habitat so blinders with them may well be nessasary? But I dought we will use the surrigator for anthing but quail, the most pheasants that will fit in one is only 65 as to 125 quail. So my old pen is better for pheasants in my mind as it maxes out at 150 pheasants. To keep birds after 5 weeks you need a flyway net. We now have one that came with the surrigator of 50 ft x 100ft, I was told put up that would be about 30 ft x80ft Not shure if we will use it ever or not? You must put steel panels around the base about 3ft high for preditors, and automatic water & feed is strongly desired with some type of house for protection. But for supper all you would need is a hand net or to get some for dog training. Bob did bring over the bird box carryer for trasporting birds recintly, he woun't let us have it till he got rid of their chickens.

Seems to me that with all the pheasants you have raised and released in the last few years you should be getting a fairly good population going around your place. That is if the coyotes haven't gotten them over the winters. I might have to give it some thought about coming down there this year and doing some pheasant hunting.

Coyotes are just now trying to come back from being wiped out with mange for a few years, some say they still have a mange problem? but yes the birds are doing quite well and you sir are most wellcome to hunt.

155 - 3 = 152 Guess I took the stones out of the chicken waterer to soon as one drowned. I still left them out as they are a hassel filling the water. If I din't feel so busy I would set up the drip system from the surrogator

Oups, I posted before i looked. Jeff & I argued yesteday about takeing out the metal circle around the birds, I wanted it out & jeff wanted it left in. So the birds started flying over and could not get back to heat, food or water. several were out side the circle but found 5 dead likely for lack of heat. Yes I took the circle out my self, It's easyer with good help lol.

Sean was hear today when I took care of the water & feed, he was the one who diped each birds beak in water the day they came, so when I opened the door he said "my they have grown" Little things like that make it worth while.
