Which barrel do you guys shoot 1st when shooting clays or hunting birds, with an over and under? I dont know if the point of aim is any different from the top or bottom barrel, but I always shoot the bottom 1st.

They say the recoil is a tad different between the two barrels. I think the bottom barrel shoots first.
Just look at the fixed choke guns. The more open barrel (of they're different) should be the one shooting first.

Usually, on an O/U with fixed chokes, the under barrel is the more open choked, and the one set to fire first. The theory is that the under barrel is more in line with your shoulder, and therefore there is less muzzle rise during the recoil cycle- faster recovery time to get on target for a second shot. Now, these days, with interchangeable chokes, you can have any choke in any barrel. And, if your O/U has a selective trigger, you can set it to fire whichever barrel you like. Whether both barrels shoot to the same point, you have to test your gun to be sure of that. FWIW, I shoot the bottom barrel first, if the target is going away.

The only over and under I ever shot was a win 101 in 20 guage. it was skeet under modified and always fired the bottom barrel first.

Depends on the gun, the chokes and your preference. If you have a traditional gun, OU bottom or open choke first, SxS right or open choke first. DD has a M/L choked open and open and it's set up for Left barrel first as he is Left handed. I've done this to several guns. I have a C/D O/U with screw in chokes and it can be set to fire either barrel first. I am working on a Drilling that has hammers AND a barrel selector switch that will let you fire either shotgun barrel OR the rifle.

Which brings to mind...
In 1974 Capt. Bernstihl was retiring after close to 40 years with the Fremont PD. As a retirment gift we gave Cap a silver plated o/u double derringer in a custom case. 38 Special with silver plated ammo in the case. It was Cap's last night patrol and we sat in the breifing room and Cap was showing off the derringer. "Hey Cap what barrel fires first top or bottom?" Cap points the gun up in the air and cocks it and WHOOM plaster dust cascades down on 5 very startled officers. Cap doesn't blink and eye, he puts the gun back in the case and says, Top Barrel.
The next morning as we are leaving shift a Detective comes down stairs and says, "What the hell went on here last night". Why? "I'll tell you why, there's a big hole in the top of my desk and I can see down into the ready room, that's why!" Talk to the Captain, WE DON"T KNOW SQUAT!

All my doubles (my O/U included) have double triggers so it is a moot point in my case. I shoot the open barrel first (front trigger) for close in shots and the more choked barrel first (rear trigger) on more distant shots.

Why you need to know...
Saturday turkey hunitng a friend pulls up on a turkey at 20 yards cocks the hammer on the left barrel of his gun and aims at the turkey, and doesn't shoot... and dosent shoot and the turkey is gettng farther away and I look ove and he is pulling the front trigger and that's NOT the barrel he cocked.
