I was talking to dad tonight and he had a thought. Instead of box traps, what do you think about using a traditional rat trap for trapping rabbits? It seems like it would work Might bruise the meat badly depending on if it's a clean head shot or not. Get the neighbor's cat too ;D

Unless your Missouri rabbits are "runts" I don't think so Red !!!!! Our corn fed Nebraska rabbits would laugh @ being "slapped" by a rat trap......

Our rabbits are huge but they are quite fragile. When skinning them, you can twist their head completely off with hardly any effort.
If it hits their neck, I think it will instantly kill it. If it hits their back, I think that breaks as well. I don't think there's any getting out of it.
Stick your hand in one, this isn't a mouse trap ;D ;D ;D

I would be hesitant to use them. They are likely to catch many unwanted critters unless you very careful in where and how they are set. They can be used in a cubby or box set if you make the opening small enough to keep out unwanted critters.
I once caught an owl in a leghold, set for rabbits. Let me tell you that was an adventure, releasing him unharmed!

I don't know about rabbits but the large size rat traps work well on Muskrat. They made a trap years ago for small game where the wire was a 1/2 circle that slammed down on the critters neck, i'll try and find a picture. I have trapped rabbits with a #1 leghold and RED for Turkeys if you put corn on the pan of a #4... Don't laugh it works!
