I've always thought the 17 rf's might have some application for ground squirrels and pd's out West, but no real use in the East. Not enough killing power to reliably kill woodchucks, yet too destructive on small game for the pot.

Yeah, it's nothing to fool around with lol At least it's accurate enough to take those head shots

For head shots, the 22 rf does that just fine. And who doesn't already have a 22 rf?

The 22lr just isn't quite capable of routinely making those 75 yard shots in the winter time when you're pinning up against a tree and can't move without everything seeing and hearing you.
I'd like to know that if I hit something that far out that I can sit tight for a while and not jump up running after it.

I don't see any reason to take 75 yd shots on tree rats? I can always get within 50 yds. Just walk right in amongst them sit down and don't move. After a while they forget your there and you can shoot a limit.
Now I will admit we only have Fox Squirrels in my area. You have to get into thicker timber in Southern Iowa to find Gray's. But it would seem to me if the timber is thicker a 75 Yd shot would be that much rarer?

90% of the squirrels I shoot are within 30 yards. I like to see how close I can get to them; of course too I have a 20ga mod half the time my favorite shot is putting the bead right on the tip of the nose so the pattern just clips them in the head. Most of my hunting is done from the end of May till the end of sept so there is no problem sneaking in close. However I always go once or twice in late Dec or Jan if the temperature gets warm and sunny. I just take the 17hmr and walk the top of a ridge until I find a blowdown or a forked sapling (also known as a benchrest). You can shoot them in the head clear across to the other side. When you have 3 or 4 down you just have to remember where they were

If a ground hog is a wood chuck the 17 hmr will do them in just fine with head or heart lung shots. I am just too cheap to buy ammo for $7 a box when $2 22 do just fine.

Twomoons, a ground hog is a woodchuck. When the 17 rf's first came out, there were a lot of reports if the 17's not stopping a woodchuck- too many reports to ignore. Having hunted woodchucks daily in my younger years, and killed umpteen gazillion of them, I feel qualified to say that a woodchuck is a very tough critter, given his size. They can carry a lot of lead down their burrows, to die later. More recently, I've talked to a woodchuck hunter I know to be a good shot- he's abandoned the 17 HMR as not enough gun for clean kills on woodchucks. I'm not trying to start a fight- but I just don't see it as enough gun for woodchucks. For the smaller pd's, and even smaller ground squirrels, I think the 17 rf's would be great.
