Trying to date one it has the fox and turkey but is polished sides and not the two tone deluxe model I want. This guy is telling me it is an early 1970's model but all the catalogs I have from the 1970's show the barrel release on the tang. I have the 1980 catalog with the release on the trigger.
These darn savages are hard to figure out models on. I don't think even savage knows.
I jotted down what I do know from what one I have seen or wanted and my old catalogs. C's - were camper companion, shell holder in the stock and a take down soft case 1972 D's - had checkered stocks with "white line grip cap and butt plates FG - field grade
V's - were .222 over 20 ga, new in 1967 1972 .30-30 was added, receivers were tapped, 1979 .357 was added. 1980 .22 hornet, 24s - side lever open, was a 22rf over 20 or 410 24ms - was a 22mag over 20 or 410 24f - polymer stock 12 or 20 topped with choice of 22lr, 22 hor, .223 or .30-30 24f12t - 12ga camo hornet or .30-30 24vs - camper/survival, 357 over 20, nickle finish, butt stock & pistol grip 24va - ? (i think it had the side selector different than the 24-v) 1975 the 2400 was introduced in 12ga / .308 and 12ga / .222 2 year run 242 was a over under 410 with the barrels separated like the 24 series guns 1977
Anyone add to my little knowledge base?

I'd say you covered it pretty well. Regarding the m-24 with the opening latch on the front of the trigger guard my son has one. It was also the last model that I recall that had the 3/8" dovetail milled into the top barrel. It was made probably around 1986 or 87. It was his first gun - a .22 LR over a 20 ga. barrel. Since he would only have been 6-7 at the time we also got him one of those "fourtenner" insert barrels so he could shoot the supposedly lighter recoiling .410 shotshells. He never was able to hit anything with it (or a single-shot I borrowed) and soon graduated to my ultra-light 20 ga. handloads using 3/4 oz. of shot. He started hitting immediately - even doves. This is one of the reasons I hate .410s and encourage people not to start their kids out with one.

I've got a 24 V-l 222/20 ga and have had it since Christmas 1971. Bought it used but in very good condition. Funny Story, I had gone to Coast to Caost Hardware and ordered a Marlin 22 Mag, it back ordered and they could not give me a date they could get one. A friend knew this police officer in Grinnell who sold guns from his home. Told him what I wanted and he pulled this out of the closet and said it was as close as he had on hand. My wife bought it for me for christmas. That police officer is the one I mentioned who hunted rabbits with a 45/70 Remington Rolling block. Back to the subject here is an interesting link. www.savage24.com/

he has the savage 24 from the 1980 catalog. I think that must be when they changed.
