I was thinking the Steel was likely in Holt Co. So it looks like it is stocked in late April. I once hunted deer on drobnys and that land and that town area [cant think the name now] looked like good trout fishing. Drobnys told me they had ben stocking it with trout but thought at that time they may had stoped as survival seemed poor. They thought the fish would just end up going in the river?

Bounce there's nothing at all wrong with Put & Take & Put & Grow stocking. That's pretty much all we have in Iowa too, but it has proven successful. Brook trout are the only species native to Iowa, but they succesfully stock Browns & Rainbow as well.
Donnie once tried to tell me there was no trout fishing in Iowa. But as I recall his wife is from that NE corner(The Alps of Iowa) of Iowa and I think he was trying to keep me out of his favorite fishing areas. ;D ;D
Your right the trout sometimes do migrate to the rivers, Rainbow are famous for that. But I think water quality in the big rivers in these warm water states would limit how far they would migrate. Maquoketa River is downstream from Spring Branch Creek(Which feeds the Backbone Hatchery) and trout are known to be in there. It makes the Maquoketa an excellent fishery for mixed bag since it's one of the best smallmouth streams in the state too.
