I have been worried for some time now that the hulls from a case of W-W 16 ga. shells I bought some yrs. ago are going to wear out totally. I have for a while now been keeping an eye out for new 16 ga. shells. It seems all my usual sources - Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, Wally-World to name a few - when they have them at all their prices for field loads usually run from $14 to $!8 a box. This is nearly double what those same stores seem to charge for the exact same shells in 12 or 20 ga. I question this and I usually either get a shrug or "there just isn't any demand for 16 ga. shells".
I was in Dick's Sporting Goods yesterday for something else and figured I'd check out their "Lodge" where they keep all their hunting and fishing stuff. I thought it would be a wasted effort. Surprise, surprise! Not only did they have a good stock of Remington 16 ga. Game Load shells, they had a good selection of shot sizes. The best thing though was that the price was $5.98 a box - the same as they were charging for comparable 12 and 20 ga. shells. I bought a whole case. ;D ;D ;D
I usually don't shop at Dick's much since they are one of those stores I think of as having a little bit of everything but not much of anything. I believe I will have to change my way of thinking.

Speaking about deals on shells ... I was in my local gun dealer's the other day and got me 20 boxes of Federal - Black Cloud- 31/2" - #2's for $14 a box... They're normally $22 a box...
Now I've got enough shells to go waterfowl hunting for the rest of my life and I'll never have to buy another box of shells ...

Ah yes 16's My father in law was a 16 man and we saved or scrounged every case we could get and we stockpiled. I have a couple cases of 16's now and just got some more new cases from BP for black powder loads. I had a deal last week though, a neighbor came over and GAVE me a box of 16's as he didn't know if anyone made guns for those any more.

Dovehunter.
I made it to dicks. Two days before the start of deer season what a funny place.
At the counter they gave me a dollar off the 6.99 price so I paid 1 cent a box more than you. They only really had 7.5 and 6 shot so I got a box of the 6 shot for christmas present for my dad. Most that was left were 7.5's.
The place was packed. I got out of the area with a bottle of tinks 69 and a box of 16 guage for under 12 bucks.
I guess there is one day left before the season starts. 2 guys were buying muzzle loaders and assessories and asking how to load em. 3 people were buying the mossburg 500 slug special in the add waiting for ATF verifications. The must have been 10 looking and gathering ladder type tree stands. Ungodly amount of boots being tried on.
I am one to put things off to the last minute but come on.
They had the worst excuse for a 1894 44 mag for 499. The wood had that plastic finished walnut and checkers the metal look ok but the fit on wood to metal was off. I have seen some bads one lately but this one was bad for sure.

Most that was left were 7.5's... I may have paid $5.99 instead of 98, I don't recall. The shells were marked like $6.99 (which I still thought was a good price) and the cash register rung them up as $5.99. I asked about that and the clerk said that you got a dollar off each box if you bought a case. I only bought 6 boxes. I didn't complain mind you. My wife and I went out that same afternoon and, since we were close to another Dick's, I got 6 more boxes and that cash register rung them up as $5.99 too. Who can figure? I still like Dick's though. At least around here their "clerks" seem to be at least as knowledgeable as those at Bass Pro Shop and Gander Mountain.

I just go to gander/bass pro/cabelas to see what I like. They never seem to have the best prices but the selection of good stuff is nice. Lots of stores only carry the real cheap crap. Once I see and feel what I like I start internet shopping for it.
when dicks has a sale it is normally a good price but the quality of what they stock normally is lacking.
I am going back to load up on some 12 gauge. I think I saw lead #2 and 0000 buck on sale but I am being thrifty. Maybe some 20's also. Dick's you just got to watch the quality of the items. And surf through all the balls. and tennis rackets.

...When dicks has a sale it is normally a good price but the quality of what they stock normally is lacking... Hey, Remington Game Loads are Remington Game Loads whether they're being sold by Dick's (or Wal-Mart) or Cabela's. If Dick's has them cheaper that's fine with me. I never have seen the rationale behind paying more money for something just to be able to say that I got it at a pricey, prestigious store as opposed to a discount house.

I was not taking directly about the shells. More along the line of gun accessories and clothing. Shells are more of a commodity purchase. I was talking more about luxury items or hard use field equipment. I will spend more of a pair of hunting boots than the local wall mart wants to sell them to me for. I don't want blisters and cold feet. I like a nice pair of boots and one nice pair can last 10 years once your feet stop growing.
If you look at the scope lineup dick's normally carries one or two leuplolds and a couple of say nikons nice stuff but then they have every barska and Chinese made cheap scope in the world. They also have every sub 100 dollar 22 rifle made in the world and the cheapest of all the rifle line in stock as specials. Those are the ones like the rem game loads that get people in the door. I love those black friday sales they have also. for one hour you can get X item for Y price (Less than or right at dick's cost) I have seen a few items I wanted at the cheapest price I have seen for it on black friday. Now try to tell the wife that you are hunting and you need her to be at dicks at 9-10 am black friday and buy a leupold rifleman 3-9 scope for 129.99. Even when you know she is at work on black friday. (p.s. my mom got the scope for me not the wife.)
I few thing I will spend the extra on are hunting boots, scopes, and warm clothing and climbing tree stands. I also want to get them at cheap prices and you have to try these things on. So i find who has the quality line in stock try on everything to see what fits and what size i need the use the internet to find the best price.
Remington game loads been my fav's for a long time. Throwing clays with the 7.8 6 's for rabbits and 4' for long range rabbits and tree rats. They even used to make lead bb's in game load but I can't find them anymore. They worked great on fox. I think they were replaced by some of the steel loads.
