Couple Questions I had since Paddle Fish tackle is not sold around Des Moines. What rod's and reels are you using? What size Hooks and weights? Do you eat them? My dad who likes fish a lot, said his neighbor gave him some last year and he did not really care for the meat?

I use Ocean Surf casting rod and reels. The size of Trebel hooks depends on the state. As far as the meat, trim out ALL red meat just like on a catfish. I boil or bake mine and dip chucks in melted butter....OH SO GOOD!!!!

DD did BROIL and I have never boiled a catfish yet. Roller tips aren't absolutly necessary but they are a help. A Penn 209 or bigger reel with 70-90 test braided line works well and if you do hoook a 60 pounder or better you are set to pull him in. The biggest one we ever had was over 5'10" long snout to tail and we had to release it so we never got a weight. Guessing I woud say over 50 pounds. Dean arrowed a 60 pounder one year and when trimmed like DD says it was good eating.

My son's Stepson's father lives in the SE corner of Iowa along where the Des Moines & Mississipi come together. Bailey takes Cameron down there often to see his dad. Bailey wants Me to go with him to Boneparte next spring when their running to snag some. Iowa does not have a season set, so we can go whenever their running. So I plan to get a heavy set up this winter and give it a try. And I was thinking a big Penn would be the way to go.

Even though I did not get my tag, I found a great looking pole for $5 at a garage sale, is missing a little pully at the end tip but two moons says he can fix that for me. a Big penn is what I will be looking for. May have to try it for big cat before I ever get a tag.

But Red Rock(Iowa's largest impoundment) is just 30 miles SE of me. The water at it's outlet into the Des Moines is about 80 ft deep and very fast and turbulent. There are Big Cats there but it would take a simular outfit to pull them out of there. Bass Pro Shops just opened a huge store in Altoona(less than a mile off my daily commute) so I'll stop in there and see what they have. The big Penn Reel is on my list.
