They arrested several guys for overfishing paddlefish and selling roe in Indiana last summer/spring. They took boats, trucks, fish equipment and one guy was getting a fine equal to the amount of roe he sold on the internet. It was an on going 3 year investigation.

It's neat that your close enough to a big river so you could fish for paddlers. I always wanted to try that! Des Moines River has so many dams on it that one has to go to SE Iowa(bout half way to St Louis) to fish for them. Probably be closer to the Missouri but I don't know any good places around Omaha & the bluffs.

In fact it's illegal to snag above the damn. Season runs the month of Oct. so if you draw a tag (for one fish) you have plenty of time to run up and fish. You are allowed to catch and release so you can pick and choose your fish. Plus you aren't allowed to keep a "slot" fish. So there is some mandatory catch and release. Two years ago I had a fish break my heavy surf casting rod. Extreme fishing fun!!!!

It kind of a sturgeon looking beast of a fish. Ancient and rather odd to catch. They use snagging rigs which are a treble hook with about 2 oz of lead on the bottom. Hook one in the tail and you have twice the normal fight.
Maybe I need to move to South dakota. Birds, bucks, turkey, and paddlefish.
Hooked on nat geo will have them on some time.

Excuse my ignorance, but what in the h#@$ is a paddlefish? Why are they so protected? Where do paddlefish live? Paddlefish are well adapted to living in rivers. Paddlefish are known to occur from large rivers throughout much of the Mississippi Valley and adjacent Gulf slope drainages in North America. They frequent many types of riverine habitats but often seek out deeper, low current areas such as side channels, backwaters, oxbow and other river-lakes, and tailwaters below dams. Paddlefish are highly mobile and have been observed to move more than 2000 miles in a river system. How big do paddlefish get? How long do they live? Paddlefish are one of the largest freshwater fishes in North America, commonly reaching 5 feet or more in length and 60 pounds in weight. The largest paddlefish on record was caught in Iowa and weighed 198 pounds. Although determining their age is difficult, some studies have recently estimated that paddlefish may live in excess of 50 years.

Well when Sean & I got home last night we found Jeff had a good 1st day paddel fishing as he had filled his tag. I din't go in and talk to him as I was tired myself but it sounded like a nice fish probibly just at the cut off to throw back seams like I heard 31 inches? just looked in the book and 35 to45 inches from the front margin of the eye to the natural fork of the tail must be retured to the water.
Just called jeff and his fish was 33-1/2 inches for offical takeing size saw a picture on his myspace and holding it up it went from his chin to near his ankle the whole fish Said fishing started at 7:00 am and he caught two in the 1st 1/2 hour keeping the 2nd one he caught and returened the smaller 1st one to the water. Said he snaged it on the right side in front of the tail about 13 inches.

Yes thats what jeff said to, also a lot were puting a lot back in the water and keep trying for one over 45 inches and he din't think much of that cause he tought a lot of nice fish put back would likely die? guess I don't know as I have 0 experance at this yet. But jeff say's next year we will put in as a buddy permit. He also said my old boad performed flwless. Now tomarow night I get to eat some of it and watch picturs of it and his game camera. This will be my 1st taste of paddle fish ever. Jeffs too I belive.
