Among many other items from my father-in-law's treasure trove of WW2 souvenirs I inherited upon his passing was this PUMA sheath knife You can see the PUMA trade mark on the next picture The knife seems to me to be of very high quality as the finish is still perfect (no rust or tarnish or blemishes of any sort) after being kept in the loft of his barn for around 40-yrs. The strangest thing about the knife is that the blade is dull (and I do mean dull). Apparently it was intended as a stabbing weapon rather than a hunting knife. Maybe it was intended for ceremonial purposes. In shape it appears very similar to the German WW2 K-98 bayonets but there are no bayonet lugs and the hilt is obviously not intended to slide over a K-98 barrel. What do you think? I'd thought one time about having this knife commercially sharpened but have since figured it might de-value it and besides, I have other hunting knives.

I think you might have hit the nail on the head right their. They did alot of prancing around in the workup to the destruction of europe.
I think it is a fine WW2 collectable but I think it might be from WW1. I will show the photo to my dad and see what he thinks. The blood channel (the long indint on the top of the blade) came along just into WW1 to make it easier to pull out the blade for a chest cavity without the suction making it impossible to get out.
Puma sheath knives are a favorite of his.

Oh i Think it is ceremonial because of the unsharpened edge.

You may be right about the WW1 instead of WW2. Among the other edged weapons he brought/sent back were probably a dozen or so swords, some of which had to date back to the time of the Napoleonic wars. Included are a couple of bayonets which appear to have about 16-18" blades which were obviously pre-WW2. Apparently the reason for such diversity in the relics was the fact that when the allies went through Germany they confiscated (even from civilians) anything and everything that could remotely be used as a weapon. I'd like to have been with him at the time. He said there were just piles and piles of guns, knives, swords, axes - you name it. He said the only things he had wanted that he did not find were a Luger pistol and a Leica camera. He said the officers grabbed up most of those. If you guys are interested and as time permits, I'll photograph some of the other edged weapons and post the pictures here. There really is some neat stuff.

The stuff with swastikas stamped on them pretty much ties down the time frame pretty close!

That looks to be a pre (1930's) WWII police dagger and was worn with the dress uniform. DON"T sharpen it as it will drop $200 in value. As is with sheath it's probably a $400+ item.

Twomoons,
You really have a good grasp on so many subjects. My father came over last night and I showed him the photo. He said almost the exact same thing a police dagger for a dress uniform pre WW2. Dad said 300+ but he also said to the willing buyer it could go for much more.

twomoons & Jmarriott:
Thanks guys. I figured that knife would be worth a few bucks, considering it's near perfect condition, but I didn't know it would be worth all that much. I may post some pictures of some of the other stuff too and let you experts give it your best shot. Thanks again.

Nice 401Knife dovehunter, sometimes it's hard but one should never sharpen a knife that one has even the slightest hint that it is colectable with out talking to some one like T/M's 1st.
