$50 Knife Shop By Wayne Goddard
This is an interesting book I would reccomend to anybody. Wayne Goddard is an American Bladesmith Society Master Smith with 42 yrs experience as a fulltime knifemaker Who for many years wrote a column for Blade Magazine.
He is a humble man who claims to have no natural talent, but maintains that a desire to learn is far more important than talent. And has pictures of his early work to demonstrate where he came from.
This book demonstrates anyone can get started without a great cash outlay.
Whether one wants to make knives, understand better what goes into making a good knife be it forged or stock removal type, or is interested in ways of making machines and jigs and fixtures to hold irregular objects there is something for everybody.
There are full chapters on Backyard heat treating, and homemade forges.
And an extensive chapter on modern damascus and steels used in knifemaking.
Wayne has a simple straight forward style of writing, that will be an easy read for anyone.
And He explains his reasons for doing what he does his way.
Don't expect plans and blueprints of the grinders he makes(most of the grinders in his shop are home made, not commercial $2K +), because he is a strong believer in useing what is available locally and from scrounging and designing based on what you have. But there are many color pictures and drawings to give you the idea of what works.
I see this as a book I will read often and keep as a reference.
Warning: I also have his book "The Wonder of Knifemaking and will do a review of it in a week or so.
