Scott sent me a tutorial on picture posting, so am trying it. Maker calls this a Bowie, not my idea of a Bowie but nice just the same. Blade is 4 7/8" and made from a file. Holy Cow! It Worked!! ;D And this one shows he did a nice job of tapering both the blade and tang. And fitted the handle slabs to the bolsters very well.

Nice pics! And a nice knife. I don't believe I'd call it a Bowie, either, but, I guess if you make it, you can call it whatever you want.

Does no hand protection a Bowie make? not in my thinking. as that was the main thing diferant on the Origanal along with a heavy blade.

Yes Bounce a guard that will catch anothers blade and a double edge(or at least a false edge at the point) along with a length of at least 5" of blade are what I think of as characteristic of a fighting knife or Bowie. I am not sure anyone knows what Jim Bowies knife looked like for sure? I have seen replica's and the one on display at the Alamo may be as close to original as is known?

I wouldn't call it a Bowie either, but he did a nice job. More importantly, you did a fine job with the picture posting, Jim... Petty easy once you get the hang of it...huh?

The ONLY documented PROVEN Bowie knife is a knife commissioned by Rezin Bowie and made by Searles. This is the only knife that with no question came from a Bowie. The knife is an 8" plus blade with a sharpened false edge and NO guard. It basicly looks like a big kitchen knife. Folks have been fighting over the definition of a Bowie since about the time that Jim died. To bad there never was a picture or painting of Jim with his knife as now we will never know.
All that said the above knife might be classes as a large hunter but it is not, in my opinion, a Bowie. The heavy blade, clipped point and the strong guard make it a , VIKING SAX ! Or a Bowie.

From my readings I would say a knife made by a Bowie as in Rezen would not Classifiy as a Bowie style that we think of unless it was made in the style we call Bowie that James Black made for Jim Bowie, Guess it should have ben called a Black knife lol. but we are told he made it as Jim Bowie asked him too. I have two copies of that knife, One a cheep kids knife and the other an over priced stainless steel Franklin mint Knife in a nice case. Witch by the way I found that nice glass case will hold perficly my Rio Grade Camp Knife and makes a even better display of a nother famious knife. That is when I'm not out fusstrating T/M's with it around camp. For any that may not Know this Knife is just like the one John Willks Booth carryed when he assasinated President Lincoln. This is also the one T/M's barwold from me to carry on the set Dances With Wolves so it's got old history & moden film history,......Any bidders......lol. Oh and T/M's 1st had the knife and did a magizin artical on it in MUZZEL LOADER before I got it from him. T/M's said he got it off an Indian that married a Mexican from SW CO. and it came from her family. now this is geting it closer to the Alamo and in mexicans hands and I belive the Rio Grandy camp knife does date to the time of the Alamo sooooooo, if you don't like this story how about if Kit Carson once carryed it.....LOL.

It is a beautiful knife though. Hey klsm54, could you send me that tutorial on posting pictures? My e-mail address should show up under my personal information (it should show a "yahoo.com" domain). If it doesn't send me a PM and I'll send it to you. Testing 1...2...3....this is a test picture for picture posting school... ;D
