Yesterday I took Allie, my youngest at the tender age of 9, out for her first turkey hunt where she gets to shoot the bird. After trying different shotguns we (she) decided on using the old single shot 20 Ga. that her brothers started out on. Well we go out and sit in a blind. I got out the Old yeller call I won here last year and started calling. The tom's just hammered back each time I called. Allie was pumped to the max!!! Pretty soon in come the hens..... I quit calling as they were calling for me (us). Allie thought that was nice of them to do that. After about 15 minutes here "THEY" came!!! Two BIG Long-beards side by side, neck in neck !!! Allie had the shotgun trained on them waiting impatiently for the go ahead from me to shoot!! I had to keep saying not yet as they were to close together and I didn't want her to bag two at once as she only had one permit. Finally at about 15 feet (from us) they parted enough for me to say "shoot" and she let them go by as she couldn't swing the barrel over far enough to get a good bead on a head. A good call by her I thought. As they continued on their way she said "Damn I'll never get a SOB as big as them to go pass me again!" She was so intense about it I couldn't even chew her out for swearing!!! Something tells me that Allie WILL score on a big Long-Beard before the season is over. I the mean while I think I have another hunting partner for some years to come!!!

;D ;D That's great DD. She seems pretty intense, like she is really into it. I'm sure you're right proud, as you should be. Hope she bags a big one....

That's great, D-D! When the bird are answering, and you see them, it's hard not to get pumped. In a way, maybe it's better she didn't get one this time- she might think it's too easy! Something tells me she'll be going again.

This way she was able to see how things aren't always under Daddy's control. (I hate to admit that!) And that sometimes you have to earn what you get. It isn't some video game!!!

to hell with the kid DD, i know a lot of Dad's that would not have been able to tell their kid they couldn't shoot at that range. i don't know what i would have done if that was me and my kid, for my son would have turned around and beat me over the head with the stock. Truth be told though my own son displayed good judgment this past winter while he waited for his shot on that doe. sometimes we can learn something from the young ones!
