Red:
Though I have not yet gotten a bird in two outings, I do really like my new Primos'Ol Betsy slate call and the birds do seem to respond to it better than my old Lynch box call. Saturday I was sure I was finally going to bring in the bird I had been talking to since first light. For some reason, at about 9:00 AM, he just stopped gobbling. Well, about 10 minutes later some fool and his girlfriend came up through the woods from exactly the direction in which the bird had been gobbling saying they wondered why the bird shut up. You'd have been proud of me, I thought to myself "well, duh!!!" but didn't say a word. Yesterday I called two up close enough to see, and I am almost positive the biggest was a longbeard, but never could get a clear shot before they either saw or sensed me and melted away. I am convinced though, that if I hang in there long enough, I am going to get one with my new call.
On another but related note, I am losing my favorite place to deer, turkey, and squirrel hunt. It currently is a state correctional facility on which all current or retired state employees may hunt. However a bunch of rich, influential yuppie adjoining land owners and their political friends have succeeded in having the whole farm portion of the property converted to a state park in which hunting will not be allowed. They'll be able to ride their damned horses all over the place but there will be no more hunting. Needless to say, I'm a little pissed just now.

Better than a subdvision going in I tell you what, that slate call is one of the best I've ever heard. It's no suprise that they respond to it better than the lynch (which might be too high of a pitch for some birds). Keep on going at. I consider it a great success just to call in a bird inside of 50 yards. Once in the shooting zone, it's all about luck. 9 times out of 10 they go exactly where you hope they don't ;D
