No I haven't gotten a sled dog for a hunting partner, I'm talking about my Husqvarna sxs shotgun. I have had it long enough now and have gotten one for a friend and thought I would pass on some tips on the Lefacheaux underlevers.
First off don't get one with the intention of converting it to 2 3/4" bore from the 2 1/2 unless you like to spend money. The bores on the Huskys are so tight you need either a special chamber reamer or you need to grind (ruin) a stanndard reamer to get the job done. That's the downside, but the upside is that 2 1/2 shells are pretty common now and if you reload the mag tech brass shells are 2 1/2" and are ideal for this gun as you can load then from a light load to a full 1 1/4 turkey load real easy.
Now all the huskys i have seen have been choked full and full and with the tight bore they shooot full and full or better so let your game get out a ways unless you really like burger. My Model 20 made in 1952 and proofed for smokless powder will put all its 1 ounce Vintager load on a 10" square target at 20 yards and will put 15 pellets in a turkeys head at 35 yards. I won't shhooot a rabbit till it's past 25 and 30 is better yet, but at that range they roll over dead!
Now the tricky part, the underlever! If you have never shot one this is really different. First off you pull the lever to the right and the gun drops open, since it is a hammer gun iit DROPS. Then you pop in your shells in a gun that is almost folded in half as it is so far open. Then you tip up the barrels and the lever goes closed with the barreles till it is about 3/4 closed. A final pull on the lever to the left seats the barrels and locks up the gun. BUT be carefull when closing that you dont move the takedown lever under the action lever or you are now holding two pieces of shotgun. It's not really hard but different and needs getting use to. It takes about 5 or 6 seconds longer to relaod than a top lever gun.
I would recomment a special acessory foor these guns. They have NO wood at all on the fore end and they get COLD. Buy a leather heat guard from Bill or you WILL freeze your glove to the barrel. It doesn't speed the reloads when you glove or your hand is frozen to the fore end.
The bottom line is that these guns are like my B/P doubles, more for fun that for maximum kills, but it is so NEAT to drop game with one! Now I need a PINFIRE!
