Doing a bit of winter camping next week. The kids are giddy about a New years eve party so it won't be this week.
Going to to a bit of song dog calling at night and camp. We will have the camp setup before dark and do some early calling climb in bed about 10:30 pm and then call in the wee hours.
The only thing we are bringing in as far as food are the normal packable stuff and coffee. Can't survive anymore with a cup o joe.
I deer hunted the area once this year and the song dog population needs to be thinned.
Anyone else nuts like me?

Use to be. Any more I kind of stay with the pull behind popup. It has a furnace in it. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Coldest I ever did was -30 below not counting the windchill but there wasn't much wind because the fan blade was froze up too. Best deer hunting I ever did do. Few days of that weather and the deer feed day and night to keep warm. Really pulls the big ones out of the hills.

I winter camped in my younger days, and enjoyed it. Actually, my biggest complaint about winter camping is that it's dark so much of the time- makes it hard to do a lot of things. Makes sense for night calling coyotes, though.

While we have had deer seasons in late November that stayed below zero, I have never camped in the winter. As Bill noted, the cold weather seems to bring out the big bucks as food becomes the primary focus.
For us it just seems that the holidays come and that signals the end of the camping year. I also try and get the camper off of the truck so that I have a 4 wheel drive vehicle for the big snows.
Have a good time JMarriott and stay warm.

Bounce, my two oldest boys, and I used to winter camp every deer season when the boys were 6and 4 till they were also in their teens. Even did it during MLing season. I remember camping in a white out blizzard more than once. Brother Dan and I campe on the Santee Ranch in a blizzard that lasted two days and that one had me wondering.... All in all theres been some fun times. Also when Stumpy was here he did some winter camping w/ us.

Going tonight all the stuff is packed and the rem 700 .222 is sighted in and grouping its normal tiny groups. The 12 guage is sporting a red dot scope and the #4 buck is ready to fly. Most of the night calling will be with the 12 but the .222 is getting the early morning stuff.
Snow and lows in the 20's tonight. Snow and high in the 30's tomarrrow. All we will be doing is mouth calls and the nice little decoy's of wood edges and ridges. Waiting right now for the pickup to pull in my drive.

It was COLD but i sleep for 5 hours like a little baby. The morning routine was rather brisk on the backside also.
We got 3 coyotes. One on a night calling setup. I was almost getting ready to leave and had one male come in fast to the decoy and nailed him with the 12 guage. We hunted from 5 oclock to almost 9:30. drove to the nearest town and got a bite to eat and drove back and sleep till about 5 am.
One day/morning decoy setup that Vance got with an AR based 204 ruger sneaking into the setup. One Vance shot while packing out the gear to the truck, a long range moving.
We had a few other come in a bit and hang up out of range and saw a small pack we must have pushed into the woods. I did the calling and mainly carried the 12 guage. #4 buck works real well. I used to use BB or BBB in lead but I cannot find them anymore. The 222 never got fired.

well on a bit of a differant note my 12 yr old decided he wanted to see how good my down mummy bag will work in the cold so tonight as the temps are at 16, he has set up his pad and my down bag on the deck and will attempt to spend the remainder of the night out there. i fully expect him to come in around 3-4 ish. and if he is as bright as he is suppose to be he'll be in sooner as we are suppose to get a bit of snow tonight. ;D

I was stuffed clear in the back end of the tent and could not sleep for all the henery snoreing, could not get up to pee with out steping on haff of them. along about 3:00 AM along comes a Cyote and stops right beside me and yips & howls for about ten minnuts at the snore-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing going on in the tent . but after a while he decided nothing would wake up that crew, as not a one ever hear him LOL. And he was less than a foot from me on the other side of the wall tent.
