I was bass fishing at some pretty popular lakes last night (did pretty well too) and chatted with a few different people. Two different people on two seperate occasions both basically said "you know you still have the plastic sleeve on your rod handle?" I responded to the effect "yeah, the rod's 5 years old and the cork is brand new" By the look on their face, I could tell they didn't have a clue... I'm thinking now --- surely I'm not the only one that keep the plastic on the rod until it falls off

If I wanted a plastic handled rod I'd buy a Zebco Snoopy rod... ;D Hell no I don't leave plastic on a rod handle. Cork will look like new for far longer than 5 years if you just clean it once or twice a year.

Heh, whatever floats your boat! I haven't bought a new rod that had a cork handle in so long that I can't remember what covering, if anything at all, came on the handle. I don't know that I would loose a lot of sleep if someone gave me a funny look at the marina. As long as I am satisfied with my fishing rods, I don't really give a hoot what someone else thinks.

Good thinking, Bounce ! Then you could keep that plastic feel for good, Red. In case you haven't guessed, I agree with Klsm.

A bit of 400 grit sandpaper will make cork look new again.
PBR you can get clear plastic packing tape that will let you see the cork and protect the plastic and it is less expensive than ducktape.

The cork handle on the rod makes it so that it is easier to grip and will not slip from your hands if they are sweaty or wet. The plastic is placed on the rod to protect the cork before it is sold. None of the 17 rods Debby or I fish with have the plastic over the cork but whatever floats your boat.....it's your rod.

guys i really dropped the ball. tjis past Sun. after our squirrel hunt we did a little fishing, and there was red's rod all wrapped just as he said. it took everything in me not to accidently run my pocket knife along the length of his Cork Condom. wow, that line just doesn't sound right.

Jim, lemme ask ya, since you were there and saw.... Now, Red keeps the plastic on his rod handle so dirt from his hands doesn't mess up the cork. And, he handles his rifle with those same hands. Is his rifle stock wrapped in plastic, too? ;D ;D ;D

Is his rifle stock wrapped in plastic, too? ;D ;D ;D his rifle stock IS Plastic! ;D what really gets me chuckling is he (Red) is so concerned about that cork handle but then go look inside his truck! i'm still ticked at myself for not attacking that handle when i had the chance to!
