There have been no bear in Iowa since the 1800's. Iowa DNR has confirmed 5 sightings so far this year in Southern Iowa. 1 last week in Fremont County became agressive and was shot by a DNR officer. They are believd to have come up from the Ozarks.

Yeah, that's not suprising. I've heard a few reports in Mid and Northern Missouri lately too. Of course the bears could be comming down from Minnesota or South Dakota too.
They say most are young males looking for territory...and probably girls.

POSTED: 11:04 am CDT July 3, 2008 UPDATED: 12:59 pm CDT July 3, 2008
DES MOINES, Iowa -- State environmental officials said Wednesday that a second black bear has been shot in Iowa this summer.
The most recently reported incident happened last week in Fremont County.
The more than 200-pound bear was shot by an Iowa Department of Natural Resources conservation officer who said the animal acted aggressively after raiding his garbage cans.
Another bear was shot by a citizen in Franklin County last week.
Officials said there have been a total of five confirmed sightings of black bears this year, including the bears that were shot. The other sightings were in Winnisheik, Johnson and Davis counties.
Before this year, the last confirmed sighting of a black bear in Iowa was in Allamakee County in 2005.

D-D, bears can be excellent eating- or the worst thing you can imagine. Depends on what they have been eating. Bears that have been eating salmon, primarily, are pretty much inedible- the stench from trying to cook them will clear a house in seconds. Bears that hang around landfills aren't so good to eat, either. Back in Thee Olden Days, there were open landfills in the Adirondack mountains, and bears always foraged through the dumps. A major sport at many car campsites was to go park in the landfill parking area and watch the bears. Anyway, bear hunters knew not to try eating those bears.

PBR, doesn't really smell like salmon...hard to describe the smell... very rotten meat? Maybe. At any rate, it's not just a little bad, like "next time I'll marinate it" it's really bad, like "we gotta bury this thing far, far away, and have the house fumigated." Don't know if anyone's noticed that, in all the stories over the years about hunting Kodiak bears/brown bears in Alaska where the bears are eating salmon in the streams, you never hear reference to anyone eating the meat. Now you know why. Bounce, I'm not against eating bear meat- I like it. My experience with black bears is that bears that have been eating a varied diet in the woods are excellent table fare.

I've cooked, and eaten, quite a bit of bear meat over the years. Some was really good, other times it was horrible. Most of our bears are corn fed, or acorns on a good year, so I'm not doubting that salmon and garbage eating bears are foul. I've heard all kinds of tales of what is a good eating bear and what is not.... sow vs. boar..... big or small.... hog bear vs. dog bear etc. And for every tale, I've eaten a contradiction.
I'm sure most bears will never pass up a meal from a deer carcass, but I doubt they get enough deer carrion to effect the meat. I have seen bear taken by the same hunter in different years, so I assume the care of the meat was similar, where one was delicious the other downright rank.
I just don't know the answer, but some bear meat is good eating.
