Red, you made reference to having eaten your trout bait. Are you gonna taste this stuff?

I don't know if I would want that kind of bait around!!! Well that's why they leave so much room for expansion. I do know a guy who had one blow up in his trunk, he traded that car off cause he could not stand it! ;D

This is one bait I won't be taste testing. Unfortunatly I can see me leaving it in my tool box for an entire summer.

Got a nephew who works at the deli in the supermarket and he brings me raw shrimp that they are throwing out. and the chicken livers work real well if you add a leach to the hook.
Homemade dough baits with deer burger and limburger chese and cornflakes is the go to bait for my motherinlaw.

Not yet
For whatever reason, I don't have any luck catfishing until August.
but I stocked up on some of those catfish tubes/hooks as sponge/hooks. So I'll have to see what works best.
My guess, the catfish will like the worms better but I won't be able to set the hook.

Well I gave it a try and it certainly has potential. As with chicken liver though, it has it's downfalls. I'll tell you 2 things 1. The sponge/hooks are completly worthless 2. You can cut the worms in half so they are 40cents instead of 80cents. They're smaller so I'm thinking the fish will get it in their mouth quicker but on the downside, it probably won't hold bait on as long just because you're cutting the area by 1/2. I went bass fishing first so I had the dipbait in a cooler b/c I didn't want it in the hot truck for a few hours. So instead of being all runny and nasty, it was all hard and nasty I couldn't get the bait to stay on the worm at all. So after about an hour it started to thaw out and work better. I ended up catching 3 fish. One was 6", the other about 14", and then a good one that went about 22". So for the first time, I was pretty happy. Something else to note. The fish would never jerk the rod as they normally do with liver. Every time the line would go slack followed by a couple taps. And that was it. So I'm still trying to figure out the best way to set the hook. Normally I do the"one handed grab and yank" but it's not going to work with slack line.

Red here are a few ideas that have worked for me. The bait should be the consistency of peanut butter, Chilled won’t work as well. Sponges work fine if the bait is warm enough. Cutting worms in half? What ever happened to that old adage” Big Bait = Big Fish? I no longer use treble hooks. I use Gamatsu Circle hooks (yes they cost a bit more, but not on a per fish harvested basis)exclusively and now catch more fish with less effort.. When using circle hook NEVER SET THE HOOK! The hook sets itself, theres a reason Commercial fishermen use them. Simply think like your crappie fishing and gently sweep the slack out of the line. The hook will turn and always hook in the corner of the mouth ( no more cursed swallowed hooks and killing fish you don’t want to keep). One more thing, If your not losing tackle, your not fishing where the fish are! Keep trying it will work for you once you get the techniques down.

Cutting worms in half? What ever happened to that old adage” Big Bait = Big Fish? Now that you mention it, the two bigger fish were caught on the whole worm and the small one was caught on the small worm. Too early to speculate on that though. Those worms are about 2 inches long and most keeper fish are in the 12-15" catagory. I only catch a 20+ incher about once a year. You don't think the whole worm is too big? At the beginning I got so mad that I laid the rods on the ground and sat in my chair for an hour like an angry 5 year old --- that stuff wouldn't even stick to the sponge or worm at all let alone enough to cast. Towards the end of the evening it was turning towards peanut butter consistancy and perhaps a little runnier. It seemed like the bait would only stay on the worm perhaps 5 minutes at best before having to reel it in (of course I could of lost most of the bait during the reeling in process).

No a 2" worm is not too big for a 12" Cat! Actually those fiddlebacks that still have spots on their back are my favorite eatin size. Keep trying you will find the best methods as you go.

yeah I'll keep on tinkering.
I have a conservation area with about 35 lakes within 10 minutes drive from work. So I may start going out there when I get off at 6-630.

Bumping up this year old thread I went to Walmart today to see what they had and picked up some of this in the blood flavor (after a little debate in my head). 20oz at like $4.50 is a pretty good value. www.magicbait.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=CatfishPremoDipBaitIt worked pretty good concidering I was fishing a new spot and only had 1 1/2 hours. Ended up catching a good 20" fish and 1 stocker. So if you see this stuff at the store, it's something that at least does catch fish.

Pantyhose red Pantyhose.
I wrap up catfish bait with pantyhose and it stays on the hook much better. Works with livers works with my mother-in-laws dough bait. I really like the rotten shrimp since I get it for free and the circle hooks. The same size as the sprimp its neat looking.
I have only seen one can but the mother in law had something called garlic spray. I just figured it was one of those gimics and just used regular baits. She used the same baits sprayed with galic spray and she easily score 2 fish to my one. Untill I started using the spray/
One friend uses irish spring soap. It weird with the soap but one of the big fish always comes off the soap but the majority of fish do the worms or dipbait/shrimp.
