I just got back from the local range, I was shooting just to keep my skills decent and enjoy myself, I was sighting in my new 2.5X scope on my 450 marlin BLR and I sighted it in a 3.5" high at 100 yards like I do with almost all my big game rifles.
I was getting consistant groups of just under 1.5" for 5 shot groups, off the bench with the first load Id tried ,(I had two more loads to try yet) (I don,t think he had a CLUE it was hitting high ON PURPOSE) and the young guy on the next bench over who was watching, said, "see thats why I prefer bolt guns, levers just are not accurate enought to hunt with"
I smiled and asked him how many deer and ELK he had killed in the last five years.......(NONE)... but thats because my old rifle shot rotten groups like your lever action he said..... I said,..REALLY???MMMMMM lets try something, he said what?
I said lets get off the bench and shoot from a sitting or standing possition (your choice),remember in the field theres no bench rests.. he said, shoot AT what?, I said , next relay we put up fresh targets, then we both shoot 5 shots at 100 yards and look at the groups, you should easily win since your rifle shoots groups 1/3 of what mine does...
well to make a longer story short, I placed 4 shots in a 3" black and one about 1/8" outside the black, he hit the target once..(NOT THE BLACK JUST THE BACKER)............I had a very hard time not laughting..... Ive never seen a rifle in a decent caliber that shot consistant groups tighter than 2" that I could not kill ELK or deer with,... theres alot more to killing ELK than getting groups under an inch at the range off the bench!
BTW want to see "PATHETIC," watch a kid with zero idea what a sling is used for who obviously has NEVER shot offhand or from a sitting position try to get the sights to steady on a 100 yard target, after we checked the targets I took pity on the guy and showed him how to use a sling and how to hold a rifle and shoot from the sitting position, and he eventually got a few holes punched in the black! I complemented him on his 270 win bolt action and I think I helped him a bit to understand that EQUIPMENTS nice but the guy using it is critical
