time frame was in the late 1960s i had purchased a ruger super blackhawk in 44 mag 7 1/2" and had been practicing extensively shooting at longer ranges at the local shooting spot. now that spot was far out in the everglades where two levees formed a (T), for those that are not familliar, with the everglades its a huge swamp with canals and raised roads on the top of the levees that randomly cross its extensive area of almost limitless distances, theres many miles between these roads which are built by digging a canal and pilling the fill to 30-40 feet high and 20-40 feet wide berms with a dirt road on the crest
we used to place target frames about 10 feet below the road at the waters edge about 300 yards fron the (T) then drive back to the perpendicular road and drive down that road about 300 yards so we could fire accross the swamp into the berm at about a 45 degree angle, range about 425 yards, now we had just finished setting up the target frames when this stranger shows up,he sees the targets and we explain the range is about 425 yards, (first he tells us its an EASY 600 yards) then he asks if he can try a few shots? I tell him " sure, try to hit the left target frame" he shoots several times wit a scoped centerfire rifle and never gets closer than about 25 feet to the target frame! (we can see bullet hits in the spotting scope hitting the mud or water easily) now being only about 22 at the time I open my big mouth and say " dang THATS ROTTEN SHOOTING!....I can do better with a revolver!) ...about this time my few brain cells kick in and at the same time this guy says ..."YEAH RIGHT KID, WHO ARE YOU B.S. ing!"
thinking quickly now that the brain is finally working I point to a bird flying low over the water at about 120 yards....(knowing from previous experiance that at the first shot those birds drop into the cattails like a rock to hide, and thinking this guy propbably does NOT know that I figgure Ill just fire a shot close to the flying bird, it will drop out of sight almost instantly and if hes not paying attention......I can claim I winged IT!)
I motion to the bird, now at about 150 yards and I draw and fire.. fanning the hammer, gunfighter style, from the hip,...in a fast draw......to my absolute amazement (AND HIS) the bird blows to fragments and feathers drift to the water.
MY friends are stuned.... at first ! then they start laughting at the guys expression, KNOWING what I was attempting to do!
and seeing this guys face when it by a one in a million chance WORKED
I quickly holster the revolver and say (" see it just not that difficult!")
the guy packs up and left! muttering something I can,t quite make out, but watching me like Ive got three heads
my friends and I could not stop laughting for HOURS
