About two years ago we got a digital camera as a Christmas gift. It's a fairly nice Kodak and takes great pictures. However, it is the kind that uses AA penlight batteries and the durn things don't last worth a hoot. We don't use the LCD screen as a view finder because it runs the batteries down that much quicker. We tried switching to the Eveready alkaline rechargeables and they seem to hold up pretty well for the first few chargings but then don't hold the charge. It's a major pain in the butt to charge the durn things up and then, a couple of days later, when you go to use the camera , you find out they have lost their charge. I was just wondering if any of you have digital cameras using the AA penlight batteries and what you do to get around their sorely limited life expectancy (other than carrying around a pocketful of spares).

Sounds like something is wrong if the batt'ries go dead so quickly when you aren't using the camera.
I have 2 digital cameras that take AA batteries, one takes 4, the other 2. The one that takes 2 only has the LCD screen, no viewfinder, so it is a little harder on batteries than the other one. I just keep an extra set, for each camera, charged up for when I need them. Rechargables are rated by milliamp hours (mah), some cheaper ones are rated pretty low and don't last long.
Either of my cameras can go a couple weeks, or more, without draining the batteries significantly. All that should be drawing power is the clock.

My first digital was also that way. I too only used the view finder. What brand is yours ?

wife bought me a olympus fe-210 pocket digital for x-mas. it uses AA bateries. i went to wallmart and bought a charger and 4 AA batteries for 20.00 . so far they are working great, they can lay around 2-3 weeks without going dead. by having 4 batteries ,i keep them all charged and i bought a belt case that will also hold the extra set . my charger also came with a car charger free,so its in the truck just incase.

d.d.
It's a Kodak. I don't remember what the model number is.
Regarding the rechargeables, my Evereadys do fine at first, maybe for a couple of months or the first few chargings. However, after that you can charge them fully (going by the LED on the charger) and invariably, a week or two later, when you actually try to use the camera, they are dead as a doornail.
I may just switch over to the premiums like the lithium or something. Based on the service life I have been getting out of the rechargeables, it would be worth the extra cost. Even when the rechargeables are working I have learned that I have to power the camera off unless I am going to take another picture right away.

Here is what I have been using. I bought some Energizer AAA rechargables for my 2 way radios and they sucked, bad. Worked for about 3 good chargings and went downhill fast after that. These have lasted for a couple years and a whole lot of chargings. CTA Digital Batteries @ B & H PhotoI'd look at a camera store, or order them on-line. Those Meglo Mart Energizers and Duracells just don't cut it when it comes to rechargables.

Meglo Mart
Hate them. Don't get me started. Wife spends my money there but not me.

I like the idea of trying a photo shop. I think I'll try that next. The idea of rechargeable batteries is a good one, as long as you can depend on them after the first few chargings.
