What type of final external finishing would be involved in a unfinished laminate stock??? Since it's already got the color to it, does it just need a high gloss polyurithane (or like product) coat? www.rifle-stocks.com/laminated_woods.htmI'm kinda toying around getting a aftermarket stock for my savage 111 but can't decide to go with a camo or "webbed" synthetic drop-in from the likes of Bell and Carlson or Ramline or to go with a custom laminate for 150-200 bucks or so.

I know guys that use automotive clearcoat for that really deep luster on gunstocks Red. Me I like a softer and easily reparied finish like boiled linseed oil. Mix kerosene and linseed oil half and half and really soak on the first coat. Let it set overnight and the next day rub the excess off and give it another coat. Do the same thing the next day and then another overnight and then rub it off again. The the next day you give it a very thin coat. only about a half a thimble full. Do that again the next day again. Then I steel wool it off the next day and again give it a half thimble full coat. Rub it in very carfully until there is no excess showing. Repeat the last step (one half thimbel full) but no steel wool about once a week for a month. From then on its once a year for the rest of the guns life. Not near as hard as it sounds.

Red, they do have satin finish urithanes that wont leave you with the gloss look if you aren't into the oil finishes. i used some true oil on a stock not too long ago with decent success and you can get it to be either gloss or satin with just a little tweaking at the end. Red any of those aftermarket stocks with the aluminum pillar blocks all ready in for your action would be the ticket and they are cnc machined to be an exact drop in fit. www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=144354

Red, i forgot you where shooting a 7mm rem mag, that being said you probably want the lamanet stock to help with felt recoil issues. the stock you are refering to would be great but to really get all the accuracy you can out of that action you may want to have a glass bedding job done too. my model 12 has the factory pillars in it but it is not the whole package until you do a skim coat bedding. my groups got a lot of help after i did that. talk to any of those guys on savage shooters and they'll say the same thing. that stock i posted above had a full aluminum bedding block in it but it is not as heavy of a stock as the lamanet is.

I don't care about the felt recoil. I used to have a small 3x9x32 on that synthetic 7mag. Anyone who is familiar with savage knows the synthetic stocks up till 3 years ago are VERY VERY VERY light.
So I'm not trying to gain accuracy or reduced recoil with another stock, I'm just wanting to get away from the cheesy looking stock I have on it.
