Well, a year ago I bought the 4 X 4 F150 ... V-8 Triton motor, auto tranny, electric everything, and 17 mpg city... I've used it on the beach to go fishing last summer and hunting this winter but I've never really tried it out in the woods in deep mud or much water ... I did that today ... I ran back on a buddy's farm ... back in the woods ... there was a lot of 18" holes of mud and water ... I slammed her into 4 wheel and just let'r rip. I was surprised that I made it through with no problems at all.... I had to bring her to the car wash before I got home to cleaned off before the "lil woman" saw my nice new black truck all brown with mud but she's none the wiser... ... Anyway, does anyone else use a F150?

I drive a 96 S-10 Chevy. But my son has a 2000 F150 with the V8 Triton. He loves it!

I have had an F-150 and an F-250 in my life. The 250 was a 1976 Highboy. I LOVED that truck. Too bad I had to sell it to finance a car purchase early in my marriage. I had JUST rebuilt the 390 in it. It had a 4 speed and 4.55:1 gears. 35" rubber. It was basically a BEAST. I didn't even REALLY want to sell it, but I put a rediculous price on it, and someone bought it. The F150 was OK. My favorite truck of ALL time was a 1965 Dodge 1 ton power wagon. That truck was the one God was thinking of when he said... "Let there be trucks!" Jabba

Yeah, those 4x4's go through some mean stuff. Now a 4x4 suv (explorer for instance) will go through stuff the 150 can't.
I'll be looking for an F-150 next fall most likely. They should be giving those things away because of the model change for 09 is going to be a bit different style than the last 5 years.
I'll be looking for a 4x4 V6. I don't need a V8 for anything I do.

Red: I would think things over very carefully before you buy. Which I know you will. I have seen v8's that were far more economical than 6 cyl in many cases. Back in the early 70's my father-in-law had a V8 Ford averaged 23 miles per gal. His brother had a 6 Ford barely broke 10 mpg A V8 may do the job without breaking a sweat, where the V6 would have to work harder and burn more fuel. Some of these new V8's drop to 4 cyl when not under a load and run cheaper than the V6.

I'll have to look at the epa ratings on the displays. Yes, a lot of homework needs to be done. Depends on incentives too. A lot of time they knock 500-1000 dollars off the small engines because no one wants them anymore (it's the "Does this truck make my **** look bigger" concept). But with gas the way it is now, that may not be the case. My dad has had good luck with Ford's V6 when he bought his 89 and 97. Ford's had that engine for a long, long time. Of course his truck being 4x2 probably has the 4.2L whereas the 4x4's have the 4.6. My brother has a 04 V8 (probably the 5.4L) and it drinks gas like crazy to the point that I wouldn't own one. At the most I would haul a few loads of wood, small jon boat, and maybe a 25ft camper. A v6 could haul all of those on the highway just fine (though with a v8 you wouldn't even know you were pulling it) so long as you don't go up too many of our ozark hills. We'll see. I might just keep my ranger and buy an explorer too

I'd say that would be a wise move. Gas isn't going to be cheap, ever again. Ask yourself how often you NEED 4wd. My last 4wd truck had a posi rear end and I drove through a hell of a lot of mud and snow without ever putting it in 4wd. Changed my way of thinking. 4wd is a lot of money up front and costs you every mile you drive. Thats okay if you need it often, but it's pretty costly if you only need it 5 or 6 times a year, or less....

I just hate staying at home because I can't make it into the parking lot or the last mile of county road.

Regarding engine size and gas mileage sometimes bigger engines really do get better mileage. When I bought my '73 GMC 1500 4x4 pickup I went with the 307 CID V-8 with it's 2-bbl carb. The salesman tried to convince me to get the 350 CID V-8 with the 4-bbl carb. I wouldn't hear of it. Several of my friends got the same truck with the 350/4-bbl and all got substantially better mileage. When I bought my '99 Ranger XLT 4x4 I got the 4 litre V-6 with the 5-speed automatic. My friend got exactly the same truck with the 3 litre V-6 and a 5-speed manual. Ever since day one my truck has consistently gotten better mileage than his - sometimes as much as 5 mpg more on road trips. Who can figure it out. I guess you really do need to research it thoroughly.

Well, gas consumption really wasn't a factor for me buying this truck. I've owned a bunch of Ford trucks over my life time but none of them were 4 wheel drive. I've even had an old F100 and an 75 Explorer when they were 2 wheel drive pickups... This truck was almost a 2 wheel drive also but Mrs. Bubba talked me into it because she wanted to go on the beach fishing...
The last truck I had was a V-6 4.6 Ltr, auto, electric everything.. I got maybe 18 mpg out of it around town and 22 over the road... This one with a V-8 Triton 5.4 ltr, I get 17 around town and 21 over the road. So I figured I'm only loosing 1 mile per gallon. However, there's no comparison in POWER... this 5.4 will out-pull that V-6 hands down. When I put my trailer on the V-6 it would knock my gas mileage down to under 10 mpg ... with this V-8, my gas mileage stayes at 15... On the whole, I'm glad I got the bigger truck...

Does Ford even make a newer F150 4x4 with a 6?
I think the base engine is the 4.6l v8 now-a-days ain't it?
