Chevy/GMC made a smart move when they put that Allison tranny behind their diesels. We had a Hummin' Cummins in a Dodge at work. The thing was nothing but trouble. The engine was fantastic, but the Torqueflite tranny was just not made to handle that type of torque. It had to be rebuilt, and eventually replaced, with many service issues in between. Can't say a thing bad about the Cummins though. The Allisons have a great reputation of reliability in vehicles a lot heavier than pick-ups and shoulld hold up for the long haul just like the diesel engines. There is no doubt in my mind what I would buy if I had the need for a diesel pick-up. It would have an Allison tranny in it for sure. I hate to said it but Cummin's and Allison do make good products. Course I don't think Chevy (GM) owns either company correct me if I'm wrong.

Allison is a division of General Motors.
Cummins Diesel is an independant company, thus their deal with Mopar.

My bro has a 95 F-250 with the 7.3 liter powerstroke. It was an awesome engine but the truck has been a lot of trouble.
I have not driven one of the new 6.0 liter powerstrokes yet but I hear they are good.
The DuraMax diesel and Allison Tranny Chevy is using rocks!

I guess I do realy have some pretty strong opinions on this as I'm just this week reminded of some of my truck troubles again. Nissan would be my top pick if I found one that fit my needs as I think they would get repaired the least, then Chevy my most liked truck but think Nissan would be more gas & trouble free, Then Ford Never keep one past warrentee and you will like it, Keep it for years longer and it will keep you for ever and parts poor, Dodge? not shure I would want one for any good reision, but their are plenty of bad ones the big one is the trany

First off, I'm on my third Nissan, I'm sold on 'em, they don't break very often at all. I've only got 38K on my latest one (02) Frontier, so it's like new, no problems though. I would expect even better with a Titan, they are excellent trucks. A friend bought a new Chevy, and had to have the tranny replaced(!) in less than 10K miles. He just got it back when we took it to SD for a PD shoot, and there were some problems with it on the trip, though we made it back okay. A mechanic friend of mine, loves Chevys, they pay his rent, fixing trannies. I know a guy who retired from Cummins, and he wouldn't own one, he drives a Chevy. The whole of my family drives Fords, all of 'em. Based on their experiences, I wouldn't own one, although they are slow learners, and haven't figured it out yet. All the new trucks are pretty good, there will be problems with anything mechanical. I've just had fewer problems with Nissans than anything else. The last one I had, only had simple repairs in 14 years worth of driving, an alternator, a couple of batteries, and a water pump, that was it. That caused me to buy another one in '02, and will be the reason I buy another in '07, most likely.

I just took my Ford in - glow plug problems - $690 / New plugs and controller. I have been looking at the cost of trading in. I don't think I could live with $700 per month truck payments. Plus insurance would be higher and for some reason if I have money in the bank and I come across a good deal on a decent rifle, my mind goes into 'hazy-mode'. When I am 'waking-up', I have another rifle and I am ordering dies, bullets, cases, scope, rings, bases, dies, perhaps powder, sling, etc. and I am thinking about what am I going to use this rifle for.

My brother traded his Jeep Rubicon for a Chevy 4 Door 4WD Diesel with the Allison transmision recently. I don't think he's had it long enough to really test it. But he did take it to Colorado(western Slope) for a nephews graduation about a month ago and said he had no problems.

In Africa and in the outback of Australia the only thing I saw were diesel toyotas. Some of them had pretty high mileage. The roads were awful. The people who drove them said they had little or no maintenance. I had heard nothing but praise for the Allison and I have heard bad things about GM standard tranny's. But I dislike automatics. The TV shows that talk about boosting power in your diesels say that if you do it to a Dodge you will have to rebuild the tranny to take it. Does Dodge still decrese the HP and torque on the Cummins engines when they hook it up to the MOPAR auto?

My Ford went back in this week. Now they say a overhaul is in order. It took them $120 to figure that out besides the $690 they charged the first time. I hate spending money on vehicles! It seems like roasting hotdogs with $100 bills. You don't get much in return!

Back in the "good ol days" of the mid-late 1990's a lot of people leased; perhaps more people leased than bought. Payments were lower than a loan payment, you always had a new car that needed relativly no maintence --- but you always had a payment. Having your car paid off has it's benifits - but then there's always the big money to be spent around the 100-120k mark. But after that, you're good to go again for another few years. When I bought my Ford Ranger 4cyl 2.3L, I didn't think I'd keep it but 75000 miles. Now it looks like I'm going to run it till it dies --- so I'm wishing I hadn't run it 85mph, 3300rpm all the time on the highway

I have been think ing about this for a while. The original post is getting old. My diesel they say need a complete overhaul. I have put 800 bucks into it recently. On Monday, I may have a small Nissan to drive around. I won't trade anything in for it though. I will keep the diesel for trailer hauling, start it on ether and hope it doesn't leave me somewhere.

Didn't buy the Nissan. Is it required to wear pink panties with laces if a fellow sinks to driving a car?
