just a tip, I hunt mostly ELK in colorado and I generally try to spend 8-14 days out there getting to know the area and hunting every year, one of ELK HUNTINGS DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS, is altituide sickness
plan the longest trip to a good area you can possiably afford, DO the home work, call the local biologists and wardens and get the TOPO maps, get in the best shape you can, and IT won,t be good enought but it will help! I try to hunt no less than 8 day hunts because it takes time to acclimate and find the ELK herds.
ITs foolish to wait all year then hunt an area with few ELK, and be aware YOULL NEED TOO get off the roads and do a good deal of walking and glassing.
take lots of asperin and ALEVE, EXCEDRIN,and GATOR AID WITH YOU AND AT THE FIRST SIGN OF A HEADACHE OR FLU -LIKE SYMTOMS TAKE ALL OF THEM, AND drink gator aid, AND DRINK lots OF LIQUIDS. (NOT BEER)
I bring new guys out ELK hunting fairly frequently and altitude sickness usually has sysmtoms almost mimicking a bad case of the flu without the high temp.(especially if they start running around with a heavy pack the first day at 8000-11000 feet)
many guys feel like quiting the first day when they get sick as a dog, before they can adjust and that can easily take 2 full days of feeling like your dieing.
drink lots of liquids even thou you don,t feel thirsty, and take things easy the first three days or if your from lower altitudes youll soon see why that advice was given
I live at 39 ft from sea level, and everyone I hunt with thinks its a joke the way I get sick as a dog the first couple hours in camp, but its the price some of us pay for the extreme change in altitude and I know it will pass in 24-48 hours, (generally its the worst the first morning after you sleep at altitude) and it slowly gets better if you take it easy , if you do and drink the fluids and take the pills , the worst symtoms will pass in a couple hours as your body adjusts,Ill feel great and get to hunting seriously after it passes.
altituide effects everyone, just some guys far more than others, and some of the TRACK STAR/RAMBO TYPES get just as sick as the OLD GEEZERS, or young kids... just be aware of this and don,t be surprized, it will pass, take it easy the first few day and hunt the whole time your there after you acclimate top the altitude like its your last chance ever to get an ELK and youll do fine, riding in a truck or sitting in camp won,t generally get you a nice ELK
