It has been a while since I have been real close to the American Bison. I was there Friday. I went to Teddy Roosevelt National Park. I was with in knife carving distance with a big old bull. (He was on the other side of the driver's window.) He was grunting, it appeared to me that he was upset. I didn't roll the window down to pet him. What a huge head and shoulders these boys have. Of course these park bison are fairly tame just like all other animals in the national parks. (I would think that they would rival many heads coming back from Africa.) A friend of mine has bison (buffalo) on his ranch. I told him that when one of his bulls gets too old to breed anymore I would like to discuss the future of that bull with him. Meanwhile, I just have to wonder, would I used a .54 cal Hawken, a .338 Win Mag, or something else?

I guess a short time back one of those bulls got upset at someone in a van. The bull turned the van over.

I used a 45-70 to shoot mine. One shot; one dead Buff............I see no reason a .54 or a .58 wouldn't work. I think they too would be one shot one dead Buff..

I would get far more excitement killing a buffalo with a traditional trapper or cowboy gun as opposed to a boltaction rifle.
From what I understand, a buffalo rarely falls down to one single shot (Will it kill it, yes. Will it fall right away, no. Again, from my understanding). Very much like the Cape Buffalo.
I would personally like to put two or three rounds of a 45-70 into one as opposed to a muzzleloader.

I was reading in an old Rifle article about the 458 Lott. The author put three 500 grain bullets right behind the shoulders of a running bull bison, before it succombed. He said the bullets performed flawlessly. I don't have anything that compares to a 458 Lott.

If I was fortunate enough to get to hunt Bison, a .54 or .58 muzzle loader would be nice, traditional of course... ;D But if I had my choice of weapons, it would have to be a big old black powder cartridge rifle, single shot of course. I wouldn't be picky, a Ballard, Sharps or a Remington Rolling Block....preferably an original.... Shooting a Bison with a bolt action, or any modern rifle, would be a little sacreligious...to me....
