I know what you mean jim. I opened by bow case a few weeks ago from last year and found out that my string magically broke. I wasn't going to put a new string on mine, because like yours...it's time for a mercy killing. So I'm using my brother's Reflex this year since he just got a mathews.
The hot bows are any of the mathews line. Those that know me know that I refuse to conform and I'll never buy one just out of the principle that every mathews owner I know is an arrogant *****.
If I was going to buy a bow today, which I actually need to do, I'd look at a hoyt. Actually I'd get a reflex since they are the same bow and much cheaper. Might look at a parker too or browning.

Mathews does seem to get the hype but Bowtech sure has one heck of a loyal following. Hoyt has always been a pretty good bow and still is.
If you are looking for a new bow you will find your budget will likely narrow down your choices very quickly. In the budget friendly bow the Diamond Rapture and the Reflex Buckskin are two great bows that wont break the bank. The Bowtech Tomkat is a nother great bow for the price.
Shoot every bow you can get your hands on and buy what Feels best to you. I shot the Switchback and will admit its a nice bow but there was no way I was going to pay what they wanted for it. I ended up getting a new 2004 Bowtech Extreme VFT on clearance and have absolutely loved it. Paid the sme as the Raptur or Buckskin would have ran me, but it has an IBO of 333 fps and dang it sure is fast.
