This is wonderful idea --- my best one yet.
I've talked a few of the boys into jumpshooting waterfowl this fall at a few walk-in ponds / water holes.
They wanted to know how to retrieve the ducks in the middle of the water. I told them we're going to bring a fishing pole with a Zara Spook tied onto it. And we're going to snag the dead birds and reel them in. My dad said he used to do that 20-30 years ago and it worked very well.
Whatcha think?

Hmmm, might work- seems like it's worth a try, anyway. Now, I have to say, it scares the crap outta me that one of Red's harebrained schemes sounds sensible to me!

I've heard of using a top water saltwater lure to retrieve them but I've never done it. We usually hunt them in shallow enough water where you can just walk out and get them yourself or we've had a dog to do the work for us.
If'n I were you, I'd try to get someone on one side of the creek/pond and someone on the other and hope the wind will blow the dead birds one way or t'other.

I've done it before. Works fine if the pond is small enough. We have a lot of small ponds, beaver dams, and pot holes that are great places for ducks. I used to keep a big spinning rod and reel in my vehicle during duck season just for that purpose.

Boy is this scary! Have to admit the title of this thread hooked me and I had to read it! ;D But this is a good idea, my son has pretty much abandoned all big water waterfowl hunting. He says he can do better jump shooting small ponds and holes in the river. And pretty much have the water to himself. On big water it looks a lot like that picture of opening day of trout season Red once posted.

Public land ducks are no fun at all at the blind and wade-n-shoot areas. Everyone's shooting (at) birds at 100 yards and crowding everyone. You drive for 2 hours and you have about 50% chance of driving home because you didn't draw that morning.
Screw that
I walk by a lot of small ponds and watering holes in the summer and jump 2 or 3 ducks or geese fairly regularly. I got to think there will be about the same number of birds in the fall passing through.
