I just read in a magazine about taking a pen cap and using that to protect the tip of the striker on the slate/glass calls.
Sounds like a good idea. I normally put the striker in a ziplock bag or in my pocket which dulls the tip.
I'm going to go home tonight and try it

hey Red another trick i read about and tried was useing Bakeing soda on your slate call when it is damp out. one thing about slate is, it don't work when it's wet. if your slate is wet just sprinkle on some bakeing soda on your call and it will work. try it.

Since I don't use a mouth call, I actually bought a water proof slate and a waterproof box call last year.
I stood in the kitchen last year trying them out in the sink and and they were soaking wet --- and both worked fine. Now they don't sound quite as good as my glass call or lynch fool proof but it's a heck of a lot better that sitting there in the rain looking stupid.

Red, run your real slate under the faucet and striker too. then pour on some arm & hammer, dip the striker in the same stuff and go to town. it works and then you have that nice sound again.
