Just reading the thread on tree stands, and I noticed something conspicuously absent. In that whole thread, I don't believe there's a mention of safety harnesses (ok, maybe one). Be honest. Who wears a safety harness? Do you every time? What if you're in the woods and come upon a tree stand unexpectedly? Would you get in it if you didn't have a harness with you?

I don't like harnesses, I wear belts (the kind that doesn't tear away).
I don't wear them in homemade stands. I'll wear belts in ladder stands but only if I hunt by myself. Other stand types 100% of the time. Climbers I will have the strap on from the ground all the way to the top.
And yes, I would and have hunted out of other people's tree stands. The first thing I do is the "shake test" when I'm on the ground.

I've never used a harness. I guess I never worried that much about the sturdyness of the stand. If it's shakey I don't use it. Most of my huntin' is done from blinds on points or high spots. Like my new stand (4'X8') thats on top of the cab/grain bin of an old 303 combine parked on the creek bottom my feet are 20' in the air (from the ground). I don't think I'll fall out. I will add that if someone else or my kids hunt on my land I will make them use a harness if they use a tree stand.

I've never use harness, safety belt or so for tree stand hunting. I've never seen or know ones too, over here in Indonesia. I once made a tree stand some time ago (of hollow steel construction, painted it camo, etc)....just like what i've seen on some catalogs. (you know i like experiment thing)....some of my guides even laughed at it. (i thought because it's funny and bulky to them). After that i've never used it again. It's just really made hard (bulky), not efficient/effective, etc. Most hunters over here can climb though....i think because they're most skinny etc...(like me, lol). So the most effective way for us here is, climb a tree (within reason, have good "sight", good branches, etc), then just sit on the branch etc...or the best is, make such temporary "stand" for more comfort thing (for a full night hunt, that's really a thing). Rifle etc is hanged near the hunter. As you know, we do hunt at night over here. And the above is just my/our methode. I personally more prefer hunting with jeep + spotlighting etc, especially if the location is fine/possible for that. Man, i sometimes "miss" with hunting again....seb.

I always use a full body harness in tree stands, its just comon sence that old guys falling out of trees from 20-40 feet up would potentially get seriously hurt, so I were a harness as I don,t particularly want to have a broken back/leg/arm, or be dead far back in the woods, if a simple preventive measure

That's just a rumor Don. And in the wonderful state of missouri we have this great self-incrimination clause in the law. lol
In hunter safety class, the instructor asked "what do you right after you kill a deer?". I raised my hand and responded "You turn off the light".
