How do you use your rimfires? Are you a squirrel hunter or do you love shooting tin cans?.... ;D I used to do a lot of squirrel hunting, but anymore a 22 rifle is just a darned good stress reliever. To me nothing is more relaxing than burning up a couple hundred rounds of rimfire at various plinking targets....

I haven't spent much time in the last few years doing any plinking but have done some squirril hunting so guess my vote goes to the squirrils

I've got to go with plinking.
I always buy them with the intention of hunting, but I always get sidetracked with shotgun only places or other game seasons to use a 22.

I honestly don't use a rimfire much. I never seem to do much plinking- I'm more likely to go to the range for casual shooting, and then I'll shoot benchrest type target shooting, or shoot a handgun ( usually a 45). Most of the time the 10/22 gets hauled out, it's to go squirrel hunting. Once in a great while, I'll use a 22RF handgun, or a CF handgun for squirrels, but usually it;s the 10/22.

i use it to hunt and to plink but more of the plinking.it's easier for me to get out for two hours to plink than to get out for several to hunt.

Squirrels! I rediscovered just how much fun it is to sit against an oak tree watching the woods grow light while waiting for squirrels. They were my first game hunted if ya don't count the sparrows and pigeons around the farm. LOL. So for me squirrel hunting is a little side trip back to my boyhood and I still love the way a 50 count box feels so heavy...solid...reassuring in my hand.

I agree Donnie. Other than sitting in the woods waiting for whitetails, Sitting there waiting for squirrels is one of my favorite things... But as I have gotten older, the number of squirrels bagged means little anymore. Way back in my youth I used to blow squirrels out of trees with a 12 gauge.. ..something I could never do now. Then, probably about 30 years ago, I discovered how much fun shooting squirrels with a 22 rifle could be. I suppose squirrels cost me a pretty penny since they were the driving force that made me purchase an Anschutz 22. But now, more often than not, I find myself with my Ruger Single Six revolver on my hip when I go after squirrels. The gettin' isn't nearly as frequent as it was with a rifle, but the fun is still there... ;D

You know, if it weren't for the visual appeal of something tumbling out of a tree / air or collapsing like a train hit it - I wouldn't go hunting.

Well I threw my vote to Plinking, only because all of the above was not an option. ;D Truth is my schedule is such that I don`t hunt much anymore. Back about 1963 when I was 13 I was introduced to varminting with a 22 rimfire while mowing a rural cemetary. Woodchuck are scarce in this part of Iowa. But we have an abundance of the perfect rimfire varmint and no not a lawnmower ;D The 13 lined groundsquirrel goes by many local names, Grounie, grinnie etc. You can get within 50 yds, quiet rifle, plenty of power and loads of targets, and they do enough damage landowners are glad to have you thin them out. But plain old plinking at targets of opportunity is my second favorite pasttime.

OOOoo, I want a 22 soo bad. I understand! And must say it is one of the best ways to make you a better shot. You can shoot 500 rounds for around $10-$15(one caveat, I do have some rimfire ammo that cost that for 50 rounds) and practice is what makes a good shot.

As I mentioned earlier I don't currently own a .22 rimfire, but am in the stage of shopping around. So far the CZ452 looks about the best compromize. I used to hunt groundhog, squirret and rabbit with .22s. I use .22 centerfires now for woodchuck and 12ga. low brass shells for the other little guys. I want the new .22 for plinking. I guess that's mainly what we use them for anyway. Best wishes.

Cal, if you go with the CZ, I would avoid putting money down unless you have a good friend in the gunshop business. If you can find a good CZ, go for it. Just beware that the VAST MAJORITY of the ones I looked at ( the lux model) had MAJOR cosmetic damage to the barrel.
