Here is an oveall of the gun as it's gettng finished. The stock was VERY hard maple and almost no figure showed up in the finished gun mostly due to the hardness of the wood. The parts I had to add such as the new left hand lock are still being browned to match the rest of the finish. They will have to sit until they actually strat pitting and then get rubbed with old oil to get the black look of the barrel and other parts. The one ram rod pipe was hand made from a sheet of light metal to match the original and as many parts as I could I took from my bins of old original parts. The front sight is an ivory blade now and was made from an old piano key from the 1880's. The butt plate is an original from the bin as the one with the rifle had been broken a couple times and soft soldered together with gobs of solder and was too small for this style of stock. The toe plate is from the original rifle and the brass plate on the new tang is there to replicate the brazed repair on the original tang. It matches the DB brass plate in the barrel. I will post some more pictures provided the bear doesn't start eating my posts again. Attachments:

Here is the top of the gun showing the two plates. The DB in the barrel is a filler where a rear sight was at one time. The rear plate on the original tang was a repair done in braze and so aged it didn't show as brass until I cleaned it. Attachments:

Here is the buttplate from my bin and the toe plate put in the right direction this time and matched to the buttplate. The brass is being acid treated to age it to match the original finish on the gun. Attachments:

Elephant ivory front sight from a piano key. The sight is way to high at this point and will be filed in as the gun is shot. Hopefully it will be just a tad taller than the suport ribs. Attachments:

Well I think I got the best compliment ever on this rifle. The local Cop came in and looked at it and said," what did you do to it, I thought it was a new gun but it looks a hundred years old".

It shoots like it was made yesterday, plumb center. The bore cleans up like it was brand new.

Jim H; Any chance you could ask the old owner who the "DB" on the brass filler might be ?

DD the guy who was handling the family's estate was out of the country and just got back. the name of the owner of the rifle was Elmer Sisco, but there is no one to ask as far as the initials on the brass filler is. the woman who we got this from is hard press to remember who she is anymore. Elmer was her great grand father. who knows maybe it was Daniel Boone
