I would imagine it should be very capable of that 1500 yard pd. The key will be the quality of the barrel. You can get to 1500 yards with a lot less than a 338 Edge, but it will do it in style ;D Ernie ;D Nope Bounce. I have wanted an Edge for over 8 years now. Not the Savage Edge but the .338 Edge. I want one for one reason and one reason only. Because I can. Its a small step up over the .338 Lapua and can toss a 300 grain Sierra Match King bullet a long ways out there and very accurately. Its about as useful as my .45-90 that I don't hunt with but do shoot every now and then just for giggles. Their both too heavy to carry far and the Edge might be a bit heavier. But when all else fails to excite for a day of shooting either of these will do. Never know, I might get my 1500 yd PD yet. ;D

I could do it with the custom .300 Ultra XP but dang I just can't bring myself to use that gun for PD's. I have been planning on someday taking a trip up to Alaska as my nephew is a guide up there and he says I am welcome anytime. As long as I bring his dad along that is. LOL He is the one that was heading up to Alaska and was taking a .30-06 as in his and his dads words. "A .30-06 can kill anything on the planet" I told him maybe but I would take a .375 H&H for the bad times. He laughed. Then he and his dad went on a caribou hunt. The nephew also had a bear tag. They go down to get water below the pass where they were camping at and they spot a huge Grizzly bear. Well the nephew only has the shells in his gun and his dad only has the one load in his ML. He opens up on the bear and empties the gun. Bear didn't flinch. It did run off though. They spent a long sleepless night in camp waiting for the Griz to show back up. In the morning they brought in a plane to fly the area to find the Griz and guess what, NO GRIZ. They figured that with the size of the bear (it was really really big) it would go to water somewhere and hide in the willows along the stream. If it did no one found it. He called me shortly after that and he now carries a Rem 700 BDL Synthetic in .375 H&H. He says it is his favorite hunting rifle up there. ;D Now, as far as the Edge goes I have absolutely no use for it. But I want it. ;D Heck, its going to be a truck gun. At the weight it will be about all I will be able to do with it is drag it out of the truck, shoot it, drag it back to the truck. ;D Should weight about 15 lbs all dressed up.

When it comes to grizz, size matters. I have a friend here in Gillette who has guided in Alaska, and his gun was also a 375 H&H. A 15 pound Edge will be pretty nice to shoot.

This would be my brother in law and his son on the wife's side's Don. Don't think you know him. Doubt that my brother's boys would worry about a .375 H&H either though for that matter. Just set them loose with a bunch of slingshots and they would do just fine. We did that up in Canada. Those boys kept a mother bear and her cubs up a tree all day. Finally had to call them off. Worse than a bunch of wolves. Nope Bob don't say much, just sits back and grins. Kind of like Willie. ;D ;D ;D

OMG. It might be back to the drawing board. I received an email from one of the Savage engeneirs I contacted with a bunch of questions about their target action. Seems I wasn't sure if something I wanted to do with their target action was possible. Mainly load a .338 Edge cartridge into the Short Target action with a .300 Grain Sierra MK bullet seated out as far as it could be. Didn't get an answer back so put the .25-06 112 on layaway. Now I get the answer back and its YES. Only thing is to get a live round out of the action I will have to pull the bolt. ;D ;D ;D No biggie as it was always going to be a single shot anyway. I also found I can get the F-Class action directly from Savage and the barrel channel can be opened up without affecting anything and its built to handle the 1" muzzle diameter 30" barrel. They didn't like the idea of the 30" barrel plus muzzle break hanging on the 112 small shank too bad and recommended I stay with my original idea. SO it looks like I will be taking the 112 off of layaway and ordering up the target action with right bolt, right eject, left load, 6 oz trigger. Wow this is a slippery slope. Seems I can even keep the idea of a switch barrel gun and use witness marks to keep everything tight.

Bill, that sounds good. I like the idea of right eject, left loading port on a target rifle. A heavy 30 inch barrel + a muzzle brake is a lot of weight to hang off an action (I'm assuming you'll free float it). I hear lots of people talk about free floating this and that, and they never think much about the leverage that barrel has, sticking waaaayyy out there.

Yup after about 6 years of Wanting its finally going to turn to getting. When its finally finished its going to look real close to what the Savage 12 F Class Target rifle looks like I hope or maybe even a bit better as it will be a switch barrel gun. www.savagearms.com/firearms/models/The .338 Edge will be the only barrel that will be 30"s long though and the .223AI 1in7 twist will probably only be 26" If I can make all this work. At least this action uses the large shank barrel and I can get some decent barrel support from it. Something I worried about with the other action and small shank. I think the engineer at Savage is kind of glad of my change also. Seems Savage changed from a small shank to a large shank barrel on the RUM's and WSSM's due to the barrel nut cracking once in a great while when they tested the guns with the double load they use for proofing actions. Told the engineer I didn't think that would happen with me as I never intend to do that. Famous last words huh. Now I don't have to worry.

That stock should track very good.

Thats what I'm thinking Ernie. Its designed as a stock to be used shooting prone and with a front and rear rest. Just the way I like it. Plus it was also designed to use the 30" HB. IF it works out I'm looking at getting rid of my .308 700 VSF possibly and buying a couple extra barrels in .223 1in7 twist and .308 Win 1/10 twist. Should do double duty as a long range target rifle and long range PD gun. That would also free up a scope so I don't have to change scopes on it.
