BAD NEWS - GOOD NEWS
I received an email from the breeder that the mating didn't take. It appears that her female had a false pregnancy. Due to the age of the dog and the present economic conditions she is going to take a break from breeding. While I will be getting the deposit back I really wanted a pup.
I called her on the phone and asked her for recommendations on alternate breeders. We discussed a number of them in the state and between her experiences and mine we ruled all of the ones we knew out. Based on our conversations in the past I knew she had some very high standards. We both disliked dealing wih the field trial breeders as they have some different ideas and many times will not even sell to someone not purchasing a dog for field trials. She was only able to give me one name for a recommendation.
This breeder is located in PA. I called her on the phone and found out that she has 14 reservations for pups and only having one litter. This would mean a long time on a waiting list.....again. I asked her for alternatives and she gave me 2, one also in Pennsylvania and one in Washington. She stated that those were the only 2 she would feel confident recommending.
The good news that when I spoke with that breeder he only had 1 female reservation which puts us #2 on the list of a female that usually puts out litters with a large percentage of female pups. Maybe it will be our year after all. Yes the town in PA is 10 hours away but I like the English bloodlines of the dogs in PA and the fact that both the first and second breeder I spoke with are using the same stud dog.
These dogs are hunters and not field trial dogs bred for stamina and nose. If this pans out I am reasonably sure I can use the WI breeders males for studs giving her the pick of the litter female. This would also give us some very good bloodline pups.
