It depends on how Wally orders their ammo.
Generally when items run out of inventory, there is a computer generated reorder. If that's the case and walmart is out, there would then be a true shortage.
Ammo might be different though. That might be something the department manager has to call in and he may not want to.

In general everything that goes through a register is logged and transmitted to corporate. They can cross reference inventory on hand and an order is sent to the Distribution Center daily generated at the corporate office(based on their inventory standards for that location). The Altoona Store had 1-2 truckloads of inventory arriving everyday(on occasion there would be 3). So daily sales drives inventory reorder. And normally stocked product is auto reordered and is normally available in the regional Distribution Center. The Department Manager can generate an order, that has to be aproved by the store managemnt team, before it's transmitted to the Distribution Center. He can also place a direct order with the vendor, however Winchester for instance had a 5 case minumum order. That could be mixed in caliber or guage but had to be in case lots.
For instance a friend, has been tellin me he is having an aweful time finding .380 ammo. If the manager had an order for 4 cases of other calibers he could order 1 of the .380. But then my friend would have to buy a full case of .380 at a time. Maybe this explains some peoples complaints that Walmart won't order the ammo they want? Guns on the otherhand are shipped directly form the Wholesale Distributors. Working part time at Walmart was something I enjoyed and I learned a lot. Still I don't miss it much.
