AFTER A FEW YEARS HUNTING elk with a 30/06 it became very obvious to me that penetration, bullet size and weight, accuracy and fast handling were far more important to success than long range and flat trajectory, at least in the timber I spent all my time hunting, I bought a 444 marlin, the first ELK I dropped with that rifle went down so fast my partner insisted on buying that 444 marlin from me, and could not rest untill I sold it to him.

the 444 marlin proved exceptional in the timber, and one of my partners still hunts with that rifle, he bought it from me for more than I paid orriginally, I upgraded to a 1895 marlin in caliber 45/70, then a 358 BLR
while the BLR in 358 win is in my opinion superior it costs easily twice as much and its main advantage is slightly flatter trajectory, I have always liked LEVER ACTIONS for hunting the thick timber, while I use a 340 wby most of the time, its far less handy in the timber and gets left in the truck occasionally while I use the BLR in 358 win , or my 35 whelen in a 7600 rem slide action
