;D ;D ;D There ya go, Bounce! Why am I picturing Red trying this little science experiment? ;D Seriously, I wonder if any real diehard traditional ML shooter ever did try making their own BP?

Yes I have made my own B/P and at one time had a nitre bed in my garage. Serpentine is easy but corned is really a touchy operation.

Didn't you figure we'd made our own out here ? Ya and a few guys are missing fingers too, some from roping; some from experimenting. Know what I mean ?

Somehow I'm not surprised... ;D I mean I do remember those cannon pictures... And twomoons seems like the kind of gunsmith that wants to know everything he can about the way they did things in the past. Fingers can be expendable, one or two anyway, just so nobody loses an eye.... ;D ;D

An eye? Well that could cause T/M's to need to build a gun with one hell of a cast off. Say shooting right handed but sighting with your only left eye?

Yet another "challenge" for twomoons. What would really make it tough is losing your left eye and the trigger finger on your right hand... I think they have insurance policies that pay for that type of injury.... ;D ;D

Well,I'm impressed with your dedication, Twomoons. Maybe not your judgement, but your dedication. I am wondering exactly what a nitre bed in your garage is.... since I know that old outhouse sites were mined for nitre. Missing digits, and eyes..... Pyrodex from the store, all in bottles and everything, looks pretty darn good to me!

Found this about nitre beds........ Historically, nitre-beds were prepared by mixing manure with either mortar or wood ashes, common earth and organic materials such as straw to give porosity to a compost pile typically 1.5 meters high by 2 meters wide by 5 metres long.[2] The heap was usually under a cover from the rain, kept moist with urine, turned often to accelerate the decomposition and leached with water after approximately one year. The liquid containing various nitrates was then converted with wood ashes to potassium nitrates, crystallized and refined for use in gunpowder. If a guy would get good at making his own black powder, and stocked up on lead for his own bullets, he could thumb his nose at the gungrabbing pinko commie politicians... Sounds like a solid plan to me...

When I told Bookie I was left handed and blind in the left eye he was all set to help me build a lefthanded rifle with enough cast I could use the right eye. Took me a while to convince him I had shot righthanded rifles my whole life. And a conventional righthanded rilfe would suit me just fine.

Aw come on now! Surely I was not the only 12 yr old who got a Chemistry set for Christmas and was firing off homemade firecrackers by New Years Day? Of course we did get thrown out of Mike McKee's mothers kitchen for distilling Coke from coal on her kitchen table? ;D

Ahhh, chemistry sets. ;D ;D Jim, I haven't seen a chemistry set in many, many years. I wonder if they still make them? Or are you giving away your age (and mine)? I recall a few unsupervised by parents experiments, way back when....
