54 unless you are hunting elk and want to use ball only then I would go with 58

You need first to decide what the rifle is for. If you want to hunt what size game, deer, squirrel, both, elk ? If you want to puch targets at what range? A 32 will shoot super groups if you stay under 50 yards and the wind isn't too high. For a combo small game and deer gun you want a 45 and you will want 2 loads say 40 grains for rabbits and 60-70 for deer. If you just want to make holes in paper any rifle will do but the bigger ones have an edge past 50 yards.

and a Vernier sight. It's marked up to twelve-hundred yards. This one shoots a mite further.

Oh no... I'm starting to feel ill... I'm afraid I have to agree with Red again on his opinions on muzzleloader calibers.. I shoot .54s and although I may someday even own a .50 cal (although I don't know why), I would never own a .45 and have no intention of ever doing so. I'm just sick about agreeing with Red again.. what's this world coming to?

Well I can't complain about the .45 on deer. The long track job was do to poor ball placement on my part.. Maybe when Ive shot the .45 as much as the .62 I'll be more comfortable with her. BTW my flintlock is a .45 caliber and I've taken deer w/ it too.

I just went through this.I wanted an inline, and there are more options,in guns equipment and bullets with the 50 caliber. I have experience with the 45 caliber cartridge rifle,so I origionally wanted a 45 cal mzl.I never considered a 54 cal, because I only hunt Whitetails.50 cal is plenty big for them.I now have a 50 caliber CVA Wolf. Good luck with it, Frank. I have a traditional CVA, and I know lots of people say they're cheap, etc. I must say, mine works fine. It's not pretty, but it works.

Today is"cleann up around the tree day"Incidently.I got a "wind up" flashlight. No batteries,so it's very light. It has a folding crank.Just unfold, crank and Begorra! you have light.Great for Sportsmen. I also cleaned my Wolf and reseated the breech plug.had bought weaver bases,so I installed them.I'll break it in with the origional firelight sights.I plan to install optical sights for hunting. he weather has turned mild around here.Maybe I'll get to the range in the morning. Thanks for the kind words. Frank

Frank, you might want to put some anti seize compound on the threads of the breech plug. I'm told they can get gucked up and hard to remove. Good luck at the range, and be sure to give us a report!
