I made it to the range this afternoon with the 1858 target gun --- the one that was sure to work after all these tries. I shot a real tight group but it was 8 inchs high. No big deal I laugh, I have the adjustable sights - it's just a matter of unscrewing the big screw, adjusting the little one, and tightening the big one down again. This is going to be easy ;D I can't get the thing unscrewed. I had two different screwdrivers at the range that fit the head. Every other screw on the gun --- not one problem. Had it soaking in T/C bore cleaner, didn't do anygood. So I got home and had it soaking in wd-40. The thing will not budge at all. And the head is getting all mangled up where I'm not sure if I'll ever get it out now. This is not suppost to be that hard

Only you, Red... This stuff just doesn't happen to other people, at least not time after time, after time......... I revert to my story in a previous post about your luck, in general... A guy named Murphy married the love of his life and they left on a cruise for their honeymoon. The first day of the cruise Murphy's wife fell overboard and drowned. After a couple years of mourning Murphy met another woman and fell in love. They soon married and remembering his first honeymoon, Murphy stayed away from the ocean and they honeymooned at Niagara Falls. His new bride tripped and fell over the railing plunging to her death over the falls... Murphy was distraught. It took five years for him to start dating again and after a lengthy courtship he married again. This time he chartered a jet to whisk them to the mountains for a skiing honeymoon, far from the perils of water. On the trip to the mountains the jet crashed in the desert killing everyone but Murphy... As Murphy lay bleeding and battered on the burning sand he sobbed out loud, " Why me, why me Lord?" Suddenly a large finger appeared in the sky, pointing at Murphy as a loud booming voice said, "I don't know Murphy, there is just something about you that pisses me off." ;D ;D ;D

Well, I have good news and bad news The good news is: I put it in a vise and finally got the thing out (be it barely). The bad news is: I had all my concentration on getting the screw out that I failed to realize that the sight was already as low as it could possibly go. So what does that all mean? That means I spent all day taking out a screw on a gun that will shoot no lower than 8" high I am not happy at Italy right now. I fear that everytime I see or smell pizza that I will get sick to my stomach.

I would have a new front blade installed. A high enough one to put my rear sights adjustment near the middle of it's adjustment range. If I lived where you do, and had your experiences with local gunsmiths, I'd send it off to twomoons. But that's just me... Of course a couple more exchanges, leading to heretofore unheard of problems, will make your whole experience even more frustrating to you, entertaining to the rest of us.... ;D ;D I'm really starting to feel sorry for you, Red. I think this whole mess has something to do with Karma, bad Karma in your case... ;D ;D ;D

If I keep any of them, I'm going to keep the original fixed sight gun. After taking care of elevation filing, that would leave me about 4" left to aim each time. I can get used to that --- plus I now have good wood grips I can swap out compared to the pathetic ones that came with the gun initially.
Or put the 200 towards a blackhawk next summer.

The front "blade" on this particular target model is one like the Ruger Blackhawk as opposed to the traditional sights. I got curouis and sent an email to pietta last night basically saying: I just got this gun, you guys had the screws on way too tight, heads are all messed up, how do I go about getting replacement screws? Their reply: Dear Sir, You can order replacement screws with VTIgunparts.com 9 out of 10 other companies would tell you they'll mail out two screws and you'll get them in a week

Ths is a joke, right? You bought a target gun and it shoots high? It's suppose to! For target shooting the gun is sighted with a 6 o clock hold and shoots to the center of the bullseye. That is with a TARGT load of 15-18 grains of FFg and cow filler. With a full load it will be higher still. Just file down the rear blade or buy another shorter blade.
As to the screws, those are foreign screws and have a fine blade slot, that's why they sell replacable blades for the drivers. Before you work on a gun make sure your drivers fit. I'll bet there isn't a week goes by that I don't have to custom grind a screwdriver blade.

I'm having problems getting the link up at work so I don't know if it works or not. www.vtigunparts.com/ab2240000Equick/images/Pietta/Pietta1858RemingtonTiroSchem.jpg [/img] www.vtigunparts.comthis is the 4th one down once you're inside the pietta section (now the link actually works) I was told by a cabela's salemanas, a guy on the range shooting a pair of uburti centerfires yesterday, my dad, and what I also assumed in the first place. You would unscrew the short rear sight screw 156a. You would then make your adjustment to the evelation adjustment screw 157. Tighten 156a back down. I wish there was instructions with this thing. Two moons, you are saying this is not correct? You are saying to file #154

Shlimazl= The yiddish word for PBR. I asked Gramps once to define this and he told me," If you are crawling across the desert, and you are dying of thirst, and you come to the oasis, and fall into the well and drown... Then you are shlimazl".

I was hoping the 1st gun's grips would be interchangable with the 2nd gun, alas they are not. So I am weighing the options. I may try to stain the two sides so they look similar and give it a polyurithane treatment as well. They didn't do a very good job sanding it, and I'm afraid there isn't enough room to do the sanding job needed.

The Remington has pretty small grips and a friend (Frank L, Bill?) took a chunk of old elk antler and made a set of wider grips. This isn't hard as they are just flat grips bandsawed and sanded to size.

Elk antlers would look real nice. If you don't have elk antlers though I although I do have some, I won't be cutting them up. I have some walnut sitting around and I would probably shape some new grips out of walnut. Like 2M said, it would be a fairly easy job.
