Customer came in the store last weekend and ordered a 50 cal Traditions in-line with 1-28 twist. The question I could not answer was since he had lots of roundballs how well could he expect it to shoot with them? I told him that since 1-48 to 1-66 was common twist for roundball I had no idea what to expect with a fast twist? What do you think? And would he want to reduce the load to keep from stripping the patch?

With a 1in28 twist and a patched round ball he can expect to hold a group about the size of the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket IF he holds the barrel inside the bucket.

If he holds to very light loads the 1-28 will shoot a round ball just fine. Look at the gallery loads the military issued for the trapdoor. (1-22 twist) 7 to 10 grains of BP stabalized a ball in the gun and would cut one ragged hole at 25 yards. At 50 yards you had to aim at the treetops but... The quick twist guns start to fall apart at about 30 grains of powder and accuracy gets worse from there the higher you go. The Dixie Jaeger rifle is 1 32 and will just barely shoot a hunting load of 65 grains of FFg and after that the groups open up. If he want's to shoot rabbits at 50 feet or so a rb will work otherwise he needs to go with at least a 255 gr bullet and 300 yould be better.
