I am about to order a barrel for my first build. Planning a Southern Mountain. Thinking 7/8" straight barrel 42 or 44(depending on maker) in .45 cal since this rifle would be shot mostly offhand at monthly club shoots. I could get from TOW and have the plug installed, or order direct from Rice Barrels in NC also with plug installed. Price is very close with either option. $10-20 dif is not much when you look at the total package. I have heard good things about both barrels. Any experience and or reccomendations.

I would buy the one with the breech plug in it already. Sure saves a lot of time on the build.

I'm going to say something that may not even apply here and that I may not actually agree with...did that make sence to you? Me neither...
Depending on the type of the shoot you're participating in a 45 caliber may be a disadvantage. For example - the closest to the bullseye. There are people out there that would buy the largest caliber possible knowing that the larger caliber would have the larger hole...therefor in theory putting the edge of the hole closer to the bullseye.
But if it's an offhand shoot it's got to be something you're well balanced with.

I worked up some numbers, The GM Barrel & Plug and installation fee works out to $140.95 The Rice with Plug installed is $145.95. Either one would run about $15.00 for shipping. So I don't consider price a big issue.
Red the club I'm joining score 1/2 ball. Meaning if half the ball is in the ring it scores the higher ring. Or at least that's the way they were scoring in the postal match they shoot against a club in Norway( incidently the Norwegians won that one). I'm not sure bigger would be an advantage? I decided on .45 for several reasons. 1 I've never had a .45, 2 it takes a bit less powder,3 less recoil due to lower charge and ball weight and 4 the smaller the hole in the barrel the more it weighs making it hold steadier(I hope)

Cool I would appreciate that.. I have read a couple of techniques. The only one I have seen done took about 10 minutes. But the guy doing it Steve Bookout has been building rifles for 27 yrs I think he said. He also has said he has had times it took most of a day ;D BTW did you get my PM last night? I'm never sure they go through.
