My 50cal 1in48 sidelock has always shot 1inch groups in the bullseye at 50 yards with 385 hornady great plains. But when shot at 100 yards they would not hit paper at all. So I've always limited myself to 50 yards with it. I got wondering again about 100 yards because I've been looking around a little bit at new muzzleloaders. So I took a big sheet of paper and shot at 100 yards. The bullet drop was to be expected so I don't care about that - but the bullet is hitting almost 12inches to the right Is this simply the fact that the 1in48 can't handle this particular bullet at this distance? I've also tried 300gr hornady xtp sabots and they shot all over the place at 50yards - more like a pattern than a group. I've also tried 240gr xtp sabots and they shot a "decent" 4inch group at 50 yards. They also shot a 4 inch group at 100 yards thought the group was over 6 inchs left of the bullseye Do you think the cause of this is simply the 48 twist

I'll be darned if I know... But I gotta hand it to you, Red. You can come up with more odd problems with guns than anybody I have ever heard of... ;D ;D

I was beginning to wonder if it was just me and my bad luck scott and now I know Jim, my truck runs fine. 58k on her and the only thing I've done is oil changes, air filter, fuel filter, tires, battery, and antifreeze flush, and trans flush.

Well, that ought to do it... If there is such a thing as a "Forum" jinx, I'd say you just placed one on your truck.. It's the "Kathy Lee" syndrome. Remember her, of Regis and Kathy Lee fame? Yep, she told the world endless times what a great marriage she had...uh huh. Meanwhile Frank was boinkin' a stewardess....whoops, I mean flight attendant... ;D A guy I worked with used to scoff at every guy who got a divorce. He could never understand why the guys couldn't "take care" of their wives, he had no problem...uh huh. His ol' lady left him for a lawyer...guess he could take care of her better... ;D Always be careful what you lay claim to, it could blow up in your face. And you know that old saying about if it has "Wheels or Tits", it's eventually going to be trouble... ;D ;D

Red, what you described is exactly why I don't shoot a 1in48 twist in anything bigger than a .45 and with a bullet. For some reason it just dont work. Once in a while someone will find a gun that does but for the most part most don't. You can make them shoot really good with a patched round ball but they don't like heavy loads. I've actually seen 50's that shot a round ball awsome with target loads but a heavy load they just don't. Wrong rate of twist for anything else. Give the RB's a chane once with about a 70-80 grain load and see what happens. That load will also knock a deer down just fine at 100 yds too.

Yeah Bill, round balls shoot good at 50 yards with 75 grains of powder. It does hit paper at 100 but I often question the power at that distance as well as the blood trail as the chance of exiting at that distance is next to nothing IMO

I wouldn't say that Red. ;D I have an idea that it would do just fine once you got it grouping good.

With that twist I would use only round ball also! Come to think of it a .58 witha faster twist isn't something I have seen very often. I don't understand using anything but pure lead for muzzle loaders though.

I've shot several deer through the chest (no shoulder) with round balls and I've yet to have one exit. They always end up at the hide on the opposite end with the ball about the size of a quarter or better.
I may get a box of buffalo ballets. I haven't shot them in a long time but I seem to remember them shooting pretty good.

They only need to cut through hear or lungs? Sounds like a Bang.. Flop Deer to me. Oh I forgot, Your the guy that wants to see a ball of blood the size of a big orange on the other side, so you know you hit it ;D
